The University of Minnesota’s entry‑level Doctor of Occupational Therapy (OTD) program is a hybrid 37‑month, 116‑credit professional doctorate offered at both the Twin Cities (Minneapolis/St. Paul) and Rochester campuses under the College of Pharmacy. Accredited by ACOTE since 1946, the program blends online coursework with in‑person instruction, preparing students for the NBCOT exam and fostering creative, evidence‑based clinical practice, leadership, and critical thinking. With nearly 100% graduation rates and strong employer demand, the program emphasizes service to Minnesota and beyond through inclusive outreach and interprofessional health collaboration.
Structured over nine semesters, the OTD curriculum averages 15–17 credits per semester and integrates classroom lectures, laboratory experiences, Level I and Level II fieldwork, and a final 14‑week, individualized capstone project. Thematic threads, such as lifespan occupations, foundational knowledge, leadership, evidence building, and experiential learning, guide instruction. Students build competencies through online learning punctuated by hands-on lab sessions, and culminate their studies with a practicum capstone tailored to advance clinical, educational, research, or systems change leadership.
The University serves OTD students on two performance sites (Minneapolis/St. Paul and Rochester) each equipped with state‑of‑the‑art simulation and lab spaces, and staffed with faculty offices for easy access. Students engage in face‑to‑face labs and community training on campus, supported by UMN’s broad network of clinical affiliates across the state for level I/II fieldwork. This blended infrastructure enhances student access to both innovative learning environments and diverse real-world settings.
The program attracts a diverse student body, including early and mid-career clinicians with backgrounds in physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, orthotics and prosthetics, and exercise physiology.

Although we could tier rank, over the past 25 years we've found no compelling benefit for ranking schools. Students are most successful when they prioritize personal and academic fit over school rank.
