About the School

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) is a public, urban research institution located in Paradise, Nevada, approximately 1.6 miles east of the Las Vegas Strip. Established in 1957, UNLV has grown to encompass a 332-acre main campus and additional facilities, including the Shadow Lane Campus, which houses the School of Medicine and School of Dental Medicine. The university offers a diverse range of academic programs, including 78 majors and 84 minors, as well as over 197 graduate degree and certificate programs. UNLV holds the Carnegie R1 designation, indicating the highest level of research activity, and is committed to community engagement and economic development in Nevada.

Curriculum

UNLV's Doctor of Occupational Therapy (OTD) program is a three-year curriculum designed to prepare students as competent occupational therapists and clinical scholars. The program admits 36 students each summer and emphasizes a competency-based approach, integrating foundational courses in occupational science and therapy with a focus on mental health, adult/geriatric, and pediatric populations. Students engage in hands-on fieldwork experiences, including full-time summer internships, mini-clinicals throughout the year, and a community capstone project. Elective courses allow for specialization in areas such as neurological interventions, driving and community mobility, pain management, and hand therapy. Graduates are eligible to sit for the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) exam upon program completion.

Facilities

The OTD program is uniquely housed in a residential-style facility within the Las Vegas Medical District, providing students with a realistic environment to practice patient care. This "living lab" includes a kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, and laundry area, allowing students to simulate daily living activities and interventions. Additional facilities include a pediatric mobility lab featuring a ball pit to enhance children's sensory systems and a driving simulation system to assess patients' readiness to resume driving. This immersive setting enables students to develop practical skills in a context that mirrors real-life scenarios.

Demographics

UNLV’s entry-level OTD program admits a cohort of 36 students each summer and spans three consecutive semesters over three years. Across all three class years, there are approximately 81 students enrolled. While detailed demographic breakdowns such as gender or ethnicity are not publicly reported on the UNLV site, the cohort size reflects a moderately scaled program designed to support close faculty mentorship and small-group learning environments.
