About the School

The University of New Mexico School of Medicine was established in 1961 and admitted its first class in 1964. Currently 75 students are admitted yearly to the first year class including 3 MD/PhD students. The medical school is located on the north campus of The University of New Mexico which allows students and faculty easy access to the educational, recreational, and cultural offerings of the university

Curriculum

The School of Medicine curriculum is comprised of three phases.

Phase I focuses on basic science although clinical skills are integrated into the curriculum. Phase I blocks are: Human Structure, Function and Development (HSF&D), Genetics & Neoplasia, Immunology, Neuroscience, CV/Pulmonary/Renal, Practical Immersion Experience (PIE), GI/Nutrition, Endocrinology and Human Sexuality/Reproduction, Infectious Disease, Research Block, Transitions Block, Foundations of Clinical Practice, Continuity Clinic, and Perspectives in Medicine (PIM). All students in the class take the same blocks together.

Competency exams are administered following each organ block, covering course content, as well as ethics, professionalism, clinical skills and communication skills. Grades are reported for ethics, professionalism, clinical skills and communication skills after completion of Blocks 4 and 6. Students are required to complete two autopsies during Phase I. Autopsies will be scheduled by the student with the Pathology Department. Both autopsies must be completed by the end of the Transitions Block.

Phase II comprises the required clinical clerkships in Family Practice, Internal Medicine, Neurology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Psychiatry and Surgery, as well as Continuity Clinic and Perspectives in Medicine (PIM). Students rotate through the clerkships in groups of approximately 18-22. The Office of Medical Student Affairs distributes information regarding scheduling prior to the end of Phase I via class meetings and email.

Phase III continues the clinical component of the curriculum. Phase III involves Clinical and Non-Clinical electives, and sub-internships to satisfy specific credit requirements. Students are required to complete a total of 32 weeks of clerkships.

Facilities

Established in 1994, the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center is the largest academic health complex in the state. Located on the University of New Mexico campus in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the HSC combines its four missions areas - education, research, patient care and partnership - to provide New Mexicans with the highest level of health care.
