About the School

The University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) offers a nationally ranked Doctor of Audiology (AuD) program through its Department of Audiology and Speech Pathology, located in Knoxville, Tennessee. This program is administered by the UTHSC College of Health Professions and is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. In 2024, the AuD program was ranked No. 22 in the nation by U.S. News & World Report. Additionally, the department offers a Bachelor of Science in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology, a joint undergraduate degree program between the Department of Theory and Practice in Teacher Education at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK), and the Department of Audiology and Speech Pathology at UTHSC.

Curriculum

The AuD program consists of 11 semesters of full-time enrollment, combining rigorous academic coursework with extensive clinical training. Students engage in clinical practicum each semester, with dedicated full-time clinical experiences in semesters six, nine, ten, and eleven. The curriculum is delivered by over 17 clinical and academic faculty members with expertise across all areas of audiology. To graduate, students must complete all academic and clinical coursework, undertake a directed research project, and pass both qualifying and comprehensive examinations.

Facilities

In October 2024, the Department of Audiology and Speech Pathology unveiled a nearly $20 million renovation of its facilities at the UT Conference Center in Knoxville. This 65,000-square-foot state-of-the-art space consolidates the department's academic, research, and clinical operations under one roof for the first time in 40 years. The facility features a 124-seat lecture hall, 13 research laboratories, an apartment simulation, the Tamika Catchings Indoor Inclusive Playground, a feeding, swallowing, and voice suite, a dizziness and tinnitus suite, student study rooms, and the Silverstein-Luper Alumni and Visitor Welcome Center.
