About the School

The University of Wisconsin–Madison offers a Doctor of Audiology (Au.D.) program through a collaborative effort with the University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point. This four-year professional doctorate is designed to prepare students for independent practice in various settings, including private practices, medical clinics, and schools. The program emphasizes a strong foundation in science and technology, complemented by extensive clinical training to ensure graduates are well-equipped for the demands of the audiology profession.

Curriculum

The Au.D. curriculum requires a minimum of 75 credits and is structured to be completed over four years, including three summers. Coursework encompasses a range of topics such as hearing science, amplification systems, pediatric and geriatric audiology, and auditory pathologies. Students engage in both on-campus and off-campus clinical clerkships, gaining hands-on experience in diverse environments. Additionally, a capstone research project is undertaken during the second and third years, culminating in a presentation at the annual capstone presentation day.

Facilities

The program utilizes state-of-the-art facilities on both the Madison and Stevens Point campuses. Lecture classes are conducted simultaneously at both locations, with videoconferencing enabling real-time interaction between students and faculty. Laboratory experiences are held separately on each campus but follow the same curriculum to ensure consistency. Summer academic coursework is delivered entirely online, providing flexibility for students. Clinical experiences are diverse, taking place both on-campus and at various off-campus sites, including major medical centers, VA hospitals, outpatient ENT clinics, schools, and private practices.

Demographics

The Au.D. program is committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment. Efforts are made to recruit students from underrepresented minority groups and to provide leadership training opportunities. Student organizations such as the Student Academy of Audiology (SAA) and the National Student Speech Language Hearing Association (NSSLHA) offer platforms for professional development and community engagement. The program also emphasizes outreach activities that benefit professional colleagues, students, and individuals and their families in the community.

Although we could tier rank, over the past 25 years we've found no compelling benefit for ranking schools. Students are most successful when they prioritize personal and academic fit over school rank.
