It initiated the nation's first Post-Professional Master's program in 1947 and the world's first PhD program in Occupational Science in 1989. The division is ranked No. 5 nationally by U.S. News & World Report and maintains contracts with over 850 academic fieldwork education sites across more than 39 states and six countries.
The curriculum emphasizes a problem-based learning and clinical reasoning approach, preparing students for both traditional and non-traditional career paths. Specializations are available in pediatrics, rehabilitation medicine, and Lifestyle Redesign. The entry-level OTD program has been granted Candidacy Status by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE).
USC’s Entry-Level Doctorate in Occupational Therapy is housed within the USC Chan Division on the Health Sciences Campus in Los Angeles, featuring state‑of‑the‑art classroom spaces, dedicated OT labs, and faculty practice suites located at 1540 Alcazar Street. Students benefit from access to multiple USC-affiliated clinical sites—including Keck Hospital of USC, USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center, and Los Angeles County+USC Medical Center—where they engage in hands-on training across specialties such as neurology, pediatrics, geriatrics, and rehabilitation. Additionally, the program utilizes its Faculty Practice locations throughout the Greater Los Angeles area, ensuring a wide range of real-world clinical placements. All of this is complemented by robust research infrastructure on the Health Sciences Campus and nearby rehabilitation partnerships, providing a comprehensive environment for both academic learning and professional development.
As of the 2020–2021 academic year, the division enrolled 684 students, with 25% from out-of-state and 68% receiving financial aid. The student body is among the most racially and ethnically diverse in the nation. In the 2019–2020 academic year, 51.6% of master's degree recipients in occupational therapy were from racial-ethnic minority backgrounds, surpassing the national average of 23%.

Although we could tier rank, over the past 25 years we've found no compelling benefit for ranking schools. Students are most successful when they prioritize personal and academic fit over school rank.
