About the School

VCOM prepares primary care osteopathic physicians to serve rural and medically underserved areas of Virginia, North Carolina and the Appalachian Region, and provides scientific research that improves the health of all humans. To achieve this mission, at least 50 percent of the student seats are reserved for students from Virginia, North Carolina and the remainder of the Appalachian Region that falls within Alabama, Georgia, Maryland, South Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Ohio, New York and West Virginia. In addition, VCOM has a commitment to recruiting additional students from all rural areas, minority students who are unrepresented in healthcare and students who are committed to mission medicine. e population of the United States is growing in diversity. VCOM seeks a diverse student body to meet the needs of a diverse society.

Curriculum

VCOM educates its students with a unique systems-based integrated curriculum. In the first two years, the biomedical sciences are taught through lecture, problem-based curriculums and laboratory experience. Pathophysiology is taught through a case presentation format and is integrated within the biomedical systems. Clinical medicine is taught through a case presentation model, and VCOM students participate in clinical experiences throughout all four years.

Facilities

The new VCOM building is approximately 60,000 square feet and is situated on a 9-acre campus. The east wing of the building houses two separate lecture halls. There are six Clinical Exam rooms where OMM and Physical Exam Skill Labs are held. Two faculty members are present in each room to facilitate the hands-on teaching. VCOM offers a state-of-theart anatomy lab with 32 computers that use advanced virtual anatomy software.
