Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine (WMed) is a private medical school in Kalamazoo, Michigan, established in 2012. It offers Doctor of Medicine (MD) and Master of Science degrees. WMed operates as a collaboration between Western Michigan University and Kalamazoo's two teaching hospitals, Ascension Borgess and Bronson Healthcare. Although affiliated with the public university, WMed functions as a private, nonprofit institution under a separate corporate charter. Its funding sources include private gifts, clinical revenue, student tuition, and endowment income. In 2018, WMed achieved full accreditation from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME).
WMed's MD curriculum emphasizes early and continuous clinical exposure, integrating simulation training from the first week and throughout all four years. The state-of-the-art Simulation Center, accredited by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare, ensures students develop proficiency in clinical skills. The curriculum includes one-week intervals during the Foundations of Medicine and Core Clinical phases, allowing students to take vacations, pursue electives, or catch up on required material. Early electives are designed to let students explore various specialties during the Foundations of Medicine phase. Preparation time is built into the second year for the USMLE Step 1 exam, and resources are provided for Step 2 Clinical Knowledge, recognizing its increased importance due to Step 1's pass/fail scoring.
WMed operates six main locations within Kalamazoo and the surrounding area, including facilities within Western Michigan University campuses and affiliated medical institutions. The W.E. Upjohn M.D. Campus serves as the primary medical education facility, featuring classrooms, lecture halls, laboratories, a medical library, faculty and administrative offices, a fitness center, a 22,000-square-foot Simulation Center, and an auditorium. Additional facilities include the Oakland Drive Campus, Parkview Campus, Ascension Borgess Hospital Campus, Crosstown Parkway Family Medicine Practice, and the Family Medicine Residency at Bronson Battle Creek. These locations support various educational, clinical, and research activities integral to WMed's mission.
As of September 2024, WMed comprises 2,357 individuals, including 346 students, 260 residents and fellows, 168 employed faculty, 1,014 community faculty, and 560 staff.
