✅ Interview Preparation and Impressions

How is the friendliness of the admissions office?

How is the responsiveness of the admissions office?

How did you prepare for the interview?

Read AMCAS, secondary essays, and my own research. I also read my interviewers' stuff, at least the abstracts, but this was not very useful.

What impressed you positively?

What didn't? I knew little of the school and less of the city. The schools' financial and material resources are both significant. I really liked all of the students and faculty that I met. I have interviewed at three schools so far (good schools!) and Pitt did by far the best sales job on me! They also scheduled comparatively long periods of time between interviews, and I ended up talking to the faculty guys for over an hour each. Each one was also appropriate to my fields of interest. The fairly progressive and integrated curriculum also was attractive. The city seems fine.. clean by our standards, and relatively low-crime. There are good, cheap college eats available in Oakland. In short, the effort that the institution and the MDPhD office are putting into elevating the status of their already-quite good program is impressive.

What impressed you negatively?

Maybe the weather in Pitt is a little on the dreary side. Perhaps a student or faculty member should give the tour...

What did you wish you had known ahead of time?

No need to read faculty research before going. Maybe just check the general research interests, but don't bother reading.

What are your general comments?

Best yet. You have nothing to be afraid of at Pitt: they are good people and they try to make things comfortable.

What are your suggestions for the admissions office?
