School Info

Integrity in Education is the hallmark by which the Medical University of the Americas operates. Students admitted to this program should expect nothing less than to be challenged by a very rigorous medical curriculum that will prepare them for the challenges of medical practice in the 21st century. The medical school embraces a special mission to train practitioners from the island of Nevis and the Caribbean region and to contribute to the improvements of health education, research and prevention for the local population. The island of Nevis is, without question, one of the finest islands in the Caribbean to study medicine. Nevis is a small island where green is the dominant color. In addition to its tropical beauty, Nevis is a country where there is virtually no crime and where the literacy rate is the highest in the Western Hemisphere. MUA was developed with the support of the government of Nevis, and is therefore able to offer reasonable tuition, an active scholarship program, high quality instruction and a continuous, stable future for our graduates.

The Medical University of the Americas curriculum parallels the courses and training offered by medical schools in the United States and Canada. The Basic Science program is five semesters in length and may be completed in 20 months. The Clinical Medicine program is composed of 72 weeks of clinical rotations at hospitals in the United States and abroad. The minimum time required to complete the Doctor of Medicine degree is 40 months of continuous instruction.

The Basic Science campus is located on 10 acres of land generously provided by the Government of St. Christopher-Nevis. The campus is situated on the eastern side of Nevis, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, three miles from Newcastle airport and one mile from Nisbet Plantation Beach. Currently, the MUA campus consists of an administration building, classroom buildings, student cafeteria, a multipurpose building with gross anatomy, microbiology, histology and pathology laboratories, as well as a medical reference library with free wireless internet access. The teaching microbiology lab includes a wet lab and facilities for incubating and evaluating microbiological cultures. A new, "state of the art," 38,500 square foot building will house additional classrooms, administrative and faculty offices, laboratories, meeting rooms, a clinic, and a general function room. All classrooms are air-conditioned and contain a wide variety of teaching resources such as classroom monitors, slide and overhead projectors, microscopes with video capability, LCD projectors, and computers. The gross anatomy laboratory utilizes human cadavers that have been especially prepared for medical dissection. The histology and pathology laboratories provide each student with a medical quality binocular microscope and prepared slides. Faculty has access to dual-binocular and trinocular microscopes to facilitate student learning. The campus cafeteria is open to all students, faculty, and staff from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Services include breakfast, lunch, and snacks, with food prices subsidized by the University. Recreational facilities on campus include a swimming pool, two tennis courts, basketball court, volleyball court, and a children’s play area.

What do you like least?

"The school is purely focused on making dollars, couldn't care less about the students or faculty. Definitely talk to previous students or faculty before you agree to work or study here. I say this only to help" | Report Response

"Dean Crum is a misogynistic, racist, overly pompous tool who should not be a doctor much less a dean of a medical school. If you are white, pretty and/or willing to kiss his behind then you can do whatever you want with you repercussions. He’s fair at least, he treats both staff and students that way. He also just loves to talk down to everyone. During a meeting about the COVID-19 pandemic, he basically called all of the students a bunch of wimps if we wanted to go home instead of being stuck on Nevis. Guess what happened? His wife ,who is such a sweet lady and could do better, got tested positive and he had to close the school down because everyone figured it out. When two students died in a fire and the student body wanted to commemorate them, he slammed the door shut on any possibility of doing so. He’s nothing more than Trump in a white coat." | Report Response

About the LizzyM Score

LizzyM, SDN Moderator and medical school admissions committee member, is the inventor of the LizzyM Score. The score allows you to see if you are a competitive applicant at a given school. If your LizzyM Score is far below or above the average, you may not be a good fit. If your score is far below, your application may be screened out due to numerical cutoffs. If it is far above, the school may assume they are your “safety” school and that you won’t attend if they offer an acceptance. This score should be used only as a guide to help you select schools and is not a guarantee of acceptance at any school. If you use this as your sole criteria to select medical schools to apply to, you don’t deserve to get in anyway.

About the SDN Ranking

SDN Ranking identifies how SDN members perceive the quality of a school relative to other schools of the same type (e.g., other Medical Schools, other Dental schools, etc.). Schools are ranked from 1, perceived as much worse than other schools, to 5, perceived as much better than other schools.
