School Info

The Mission of the School of Medicine is to develop competent physicians with an outstanding academic preparation within a humanistic and holistic framework, with a highly developed commitment to social duties, and service to Puerto Rico and Hispanic communities throughout the U.S. mainland. The UCC School of Medicine is committed to providing our students with integrated knowledge from the basic sciences to medicine and with disciplined critical thinking and analysis. We encourage a dedication to lifelong learning as well as attitudes of compassion and respect for human dignity. The School of Medicine contributes to the enrichment and enhancement of knowledge by strengthening a creative environment that fosters the development of research in the biomedical, clinical, and psychosocial sciences oriented to the health needs of our community. Within the scope of its mission, the School of Medicine offers quality health services at the primary care level and in specialized curative rehabilitative services in a cost-effective and accessible manner to the population that it serves.

Curriculum

The curriculum of the School of Medicine consists of four years of studies. In the first two years it provides students with a basic foundation in both biomedical sciences and clinical skills. The students are introduced early to standardized patients as they learn communication, observation, and examination skills. Students have an opportunity to use their newly acquired skills with genuine patients in the Longitudinal Primary Care Preceptorship under the supervision of community preceptors. The students receive formative evaluations from the patients and faculty during the sessions in which standardized patients are used.

Affiliate hospitals: Ramón Ruiz Arnau University Hospital, San Pablo Hospital, Hospital Interamericano de Medicina Avanzada (HIMA), Veteran's Administration Hospital, Psychiatric Panamerican Hospital, San Jorge Children's Hospital, San Juan City Hospital, Groups & Community Physicians.

What are your suggestions for the admissions office?

"I was not exactly fluent in spanish but could understand it at an advanced level. My advice: accommodate the English speaking students by speaking to them in English." More from this Member | Report Response

What is one of the specific questions they asked you (question 1)?

"Have you done any research?" More from this Member | Report Response | I was asked this question too

"For the group interview, the professor gave us a hypothetical situation involving a student who cheated on an exam. We had four questions which we analyzed (ethical and moral in nature). I think the whole point of this exercise was two fold. First, the professor probably wanted us to see if we had morals. Second, he wanted to see how we actually organized the group discussion. Did one person dominate the discussion? Did everyone get a chance to give their two cents? My advice would be to somewhat organize the discussion so that no one would be left out and everyone would have a chance to talk." More from this Member | Report Response | I was asked this question too

"Tells us about yourself? (It was really this general. The two professors sat opposite the table from me and they had my file but did not open it. They said they wanted to hear about me in my own words. So I started talking and they asked further probes based on what I has already said. I really guided where the interview went.)" About the LizzyM Score

LizzyM, SDN Moderator and medical school admissions committee member, is the inventor of the LizzyM Score. The score allows you to see if you are a competitive applicant at a given school. If your LizzyM Score is far below or above the average, you may not be a good fit. If your score is far below, your application may be screened out due to numerical cutoffs. If it is far above, the school may assume they are your “safety” school and that you won’t attend if they offer an acceptance. This score should be used only as a guide to help you select schools and is not a guarantee of acceptance at any school. If you use this as your sole criteria to select medical schools to apply to, you don’t deserve to get in anyway.
