"Small campus"
"too short and too many stock questions, I wish they asked more specific questions."
"location is not optimal"
"Interviewers were playing good cop/bad cop and questioned every answer I stated no matter how specific I gave. "Online interview (covid 19)"
"The presentation of the school overall"
"Seemed to downplay the potential danger of the surrounding area, but most students felt safe most of the time. School is closed at inconvenient hours if you want extra study time."
"There were no vegetarian options for lunch so some of us were very hungry all day."

"Detroit wasn't a very impressive city."
"The school is in Detroit where there are a bunch of abandoned buildings and broken street lights so not a place you feel completely safe to roam around. Being on the campus is safe, but I don't think the surrounding area is. Many students drive in from surrounding suburbs. School closes completely at 10pm, so no late night studying on campus"
"I don't like the idea of driving around in Detroit, especially during high traffic rush hours."
"The doubling of class size but not doubling of faculty, the location of the school."
"Interview day consists of 40-50 applicants and it was a saturday interview (not get to see student atmosphere)"
"There were 2 people asking questions because one would fire the next question as I finished the other question. And there was no water to moisten your mouth"
"The location. It sort of reminds me of Boston. Some nice areas, lots of crappy areas."
"It's in Detroit, but then again that is the reason for the excellent patient base I suppose. The immediate area isn't bad at all, the building/parking lot is very secure, and the school is right off the expressway, but I still wouldn't go for a night run."
"The area around the school"
"cost"
"location, rough area plus everyone drives 30 minutes +/- one way to campus"
"The area, although it is a positive because those patients give you great experience and great clinical skills."
"Greeting at reception. My mother and I walked in and asked what there was to do in the area in terms of tourist attractions and shopping, and the receptionist asked where we were from. We told her Ottawa, and she gave us a very condescending look and told us that there was a casino close by...and we had those in Ottawa right? She was referring to the Ottawa indian tribe, whereas we were a little confused given that we were from Ottawa, Canada's capital! How embarassing for her..."
"neighborhood"
"There is not much around! Detroit is not far away though."
"location of the school "
"They were still in the process of moving in so some things are unorganized. Phone lines seem to not be working when I tried to call before my interview."
"Lack of research compared to other schools, but was assured if I really wanted to, the school would try to accomodate my requests."
"The front guard was a little rude but he was just doing his job and protecting the grounds"
"The location of the schoool has surrounding areas that are not very plesant - but this is POSITIVE because their clinic get SOOOO many people with so many needs - you will get exposure to things that you would never see at schools based in nicer areas "
"Nothing"
"The location (Detroit/the neighborhood) was a bit sketchy, the school was small, and it was separated from the main campus, which could make it quite isolated."
"location"
"It is in detroit, but that works out to your advantage because of the huge patient base and the amont of experiences you can get."
"The area around the school."
"Nothing."
"unsure of where the new school will be"
"They are moving in Aug. of 2007, but this has its ups: They will probably be moving downtown (more of a city environment) plus the facilities will all be new and better than the already quite-nice setup they have now. THe entering class of 2005 will be spending their 3rd and 4th years in an all new building with new clinics."
"Nothing negative to say about this school, I liked that it was small and that the students received lots of attention and practiced in high-tech clinics....I just didn't like Detroit. It was sort of scary compared to my home-town."
"no gym or other extra curricular activities. Not the best neighbourhood"
"the ghetto area surrounding the school..."
"The tour was very quick and given by the admissions secretary because no student was available. She was as helpful as she could be but the student led tours are probably better. I had previously taken a tour at the UDM open house that was much more informative."
"campus is run down, detroit is cold"
"The fact that the school is going to be moving in two years and no one knows where but they think it good be downtown Detroit. Although I am from Michigan, Detroit scares me!"
"The are does not seem the safest, but they have security guards and large iron fences."
"UDM is not in the best area, but the entire school is surrounded by a 10 foot tall steel fence with guards at the gates."
"The location"
"Small school, commuting, having me try on a white coat seemed too forward"
"Not in the greatest neighborhood, but the campus seems pretty insulated."
"I am not a person concern with fancy and expensive new facilities. Their classrooms and library are a bit older, but clinic was built in 1997. Also for some who are afraid of “bad areas†well there is large segments of the city with this. "
"Maybe the cost...but nothing really."
"The janky tour given by the admissions secretary (she didn't know what most of the rooms were, luckily my friend gave an additional tour)"
"Rehearsed questions more"
"Pre group interview with the dean"
"keep track on which parts of your application they've touched on in the interview, because they don't want to leave any stones unturned. At the end they ask you to elaborate on what they've missed."
"that it was 2 faculties, I thought it was 1 faculty and 1 student."
"not an easy-going conversation"
"to monitor my response time"
"RELAX. My interview group had 60 people. Long introduction to the school, long tour,"
"To eat beforehand."
"Nothing, everything went as planned."
"that no food was being offered"
"I could have prepared more for the ethical questions."
"Low-stress interview/environment."
"The interview was more of a 2 on 1 interrogation."
"That I would be the only one interviewing that day (10/8/12), that my tour guide would be my interviewer and that I was going to eat lunch with him. It was all a good thing as I could keep showing him my personality after the interview but it also made it feel like the interview lasted the whole day. I didn't want to say something stupid."
"Intimidation by faculty interviewer"
"Just be yourself. Preparing isnt the best thing to do. Being calm is the best advice, focus on breathing so you dont get short of breath and seem nervous."
"They gave me some privacy to talk to students working in their sim lab. It was impromptu, and the students I talked to was totally up to me. I could have had "juicier" questions prepared if I would've known that."
"That the interview was so relaxed. It's sort of makes you feel like you're just walking in on a day at the school."
"That it was just an interview and a school tour."
"they are trying to almost double their class size. i wonder if this will change their great clinical reputation"
"It was finals week. There weren't many students around and most of them were studying basically isolated or in small groups."
"Lunch was provided"
"easy interview and they give you no lunch (was hungry during the interview)"
"There was a lot of construction on I-75, so be careful and allow plenty of travel time."
"nothing... "
"Nothing out of the ordinary."
"That the students are AWESOME and I actually can see myself attending the school over other places."
"That it was a clinical based school and they extended their services to 4 other clicnics in the Detroit metro & surrounding area"
"dont worry about it. be confident, plesant, it is generally meeting the faculty and seeing the schoool. "
"interview and tour were only 2 hours. i was free after that."
"Nothing."
"nothing"
"length of interview"
"it was really not stressful at all"
"Plan some time trying to find the school if you aren't familiar with the area so you aren't late. I got lost a few times on the way although luckily I left really early so I had plenty of time. "
"That I was only going to be there for two hours. Plus the drive to Detroit sucks!!"
"The interview seems to be an opportunity for the admission committee you get to know you and how determined you are to becoming a dentist. "
"Most of the buildings were somewhat run down, and it's in the middle of the ghetto (I knew this before, but it took driving to the school for it to sink in.) Oh, and they have odd policies on renting instruments and sending out labwork. "
"Interviewers seemed to be unhappy with my answers even though they were rather textbook. Could be an issue on my end though not sure."
"generally relaxed, literally exactly what you would expect."
"it was a great inteview"
"I was super nervous and think I didn't do too well but overall it was not hard questions. This was my first interview ever so I panic."
"student information session and wrap up the interview were very reassuring and showed a lot of good personalities as well as positives in the school."
"I interviewed during the covid 19 pandemic so I had mine online. Overall, it was the same style as an in person interview just through a screen. Harder to gauge ones personality"
"Loved the school, haters gonna hate."
"Really great, welcoming school."
"I loved the school, faculty, and facilities, but the school is way too expensive."
"I really liked how they emphasized that their goal is to produce practice ready graduates."
"overall good school great clinical work"
"Great school."
"Liked the school. State of the art facilities."
"UDM emphasizes making great clinicians, and they don't disappoint."
"It was honestly a huge surprise for me; I didn't think I'd like it as much as I did. It is a super nice school with great faculty and students and it sounds like such a supportive environment."
"I hope I get accepted!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
"very nice school, facility is very nice, a run down area but thats part of the experience and being able to treat a variety of patients"
"I liked everything about the school minus the increase class size and price. It was very difficult to give up my acceptance to the school."
"They will intimidate you at first but they will open up to you later on."
"Make sure you are calm and dress very professional they notice everything. Top button buttoned with tie all the way up."
"About what I expected, good clinical prep, maybe less need for a GPR or AEGD than most school's graduates, a so-so/cold location."
"A+ program. I almost didn't come because of the location's rep, but I am really glad I did."
"Nice faculty and the facilities looked top notch. Personally, I didn't think this school was the right fit for me though."
"Great school...top choice"
"good enough school to still question if i made the right decision not to go there"
"Great dental school, great faculty and staff, friendliness everywhere! Just wish I could place the school in my backyard."
"Great experience! I was interviewed on the clinic floor and really got a first hand look at the student experience at the school."
"love the school/hate the city. wish i could transplant the school to a different city! lol"
"**This was for the 7 YEAR BS/DDS PROGRAM.** I had an essay and two interviews. The essay was about 3 subjects: is health care a right or privilege, what makes you a good dentist, and why come to udm's 7 year program. The first interview was with a guy from the college of science and we talked about everyday things, politics, etc. the 2nd interview was with a guy from the dental school and that was more about denistry. The below ?s were from the dentistry guy. "
"Laid back interview with intersting faculty. They are on top of the game, especially when it comes to selecting good dentist, not just good academics."
"Great interview. very laid back. no stressful questions. It's pretty much a conversation, just so they get to know you."
"I had a tour from a student first. My interview was with one of the professors. It was very informal and laid back. Very few actual questions were asked, but it was mostly just a conversation about the school and dentistry in general."
"interview was very laid back. they want to make sure the student knows about dentistry and not just trying to get in because of his/her high grades. just be yourself. It is more of a conversation than asking standard interview questions. be prepared to answer questions about specific low grades you got in classes or on the DAT because they will ask why. Cheating question is asked every single time, so be sure you tell them ''the cheater doesn't deserve to be in dental school, it's not professional or ethical'' New school is very nice. The interview goes by quickly so make sure you tell and show all of the good stuff about you in the short time you get to talk. "
"I have to say, I drove over and there was a lot of construction going on on the highways so I got lost. I tried to call to get directions but the phone lines were not working which was annoying. I ended up showing up 5 minutes late. However it wasn't a big issue since the person interviewing me was late also. The school is very nice since it was just renovated and still in the process of being renovated. Some things seem a little disorganized but the kinks would be fixed once they finish moving into the new site. "
"Arrived about 15 minutes prior to my interview. First thing was the jacket fitting and I debated whether to put my nickname on it, but then decided against it. My interview picked me up and took me into the clinic. Firstly, he told me the cons of UDM which I admired since no school that I have visited previously would tell me why I shouldn't go there. Anyway, the interview was in the clinic and mostly I observed my interviewer tending to students and their patients. The actual interview was maybe only 5 minutes as I never really fully answered any questions that were asked since we were in such a bind for time. Then had lunch which my interviewer paid for and ate with the seniors. After lunch came back to the clinic to finish my interview. Then went home. Good times all around!"
"The interview was relaxing. They did majority of the talking. It was more of a conversation and somehow you need to figure out a way to portray your ideas, personality, and attributes that make you stand out amongst the crowd."
"It started off by meeting the assistant admissions director, Ms Blackburn. She fit me up for a white lab coat and asked how I would like my name spelled on it - this was very cool and inspiring. Next I sat in a small waiting room designated for interviewees with a little glass wall. My interviewer (Dr. Berkowski) came and picked me up and we went down to the clinic to conduct our interview in one of the open bays, since he is not a perminant professor and does not have an office. The interview started off with a few general questions, why dentistry, strenghts/weaknesses, what would i do if i saw someone cheating (the correct answer to this question is to rat them out,... even though i'd have a hard time doing that. It messes up the grading curve and is unfair) , what would i do if i were failing a class in dental school , what would i do if i didn't get in, what if i COULD NOT be a dentist, what happened to my freshmen (low scores) year , ... that kind of stuff. After about 25-30 minutes of that, he took the rest of the hour telling me about UDM. everything about their specialty programs, clinics, what they are and what they aren't (they are clinic, not research). in the middle of our interview students would come up and ask him questions (he is the clinical professor), so we'd go over to the patient, talk about the case, he show me things, and we went back to continue the interview - very relaxed setting. He took me on a tour of the school, and bought my lunch with two other dental students who told me their take of it. They seem to like it a lot, and say it's very challenging, and talked about the usual class/professor venting about the things they dont like. After the lunch we went back to the clinic and met back up with the interviewer, asked me for any questions, told me specificially that he is going to "endorse me", and was impressed with how things went. Then he walked me out the front door. "
"Overall interview experience was really good!!! During my interview Dr. Jeffers (super nice guy) gave me couple hints of my acceptance :)) . They send me letter in next week."
"Great experience. I wasn't very nervous going in, and it was exactly what I expected - very relaxed, conversational, everyone was reassuring."
"It was a good experience. Very relaxed."
"It started out with just a list of standardized questions they ask you and then it is just open for you to ask questions. It was pretty much just a good conversation between us. "
"overall is was a positive experience, but it was by no means as impressive as other schools i have been to."
"Interview went great and I was accepted and will attend UDM."
"It was a very relaxed experience and it was pretty much a conversation. "
"Immediatly interview, followed by a tour."
"Overall a great school, great faculty and students. Got accepted a week later and starting next fall"
"Great Program. For all you out-of-staters afraid of the location... its not as bad as you think. While its in detroit, its pretty much surrounded by a neighborhood and also has an intimidating perimeter fence with security before you enter."
"Excellent...I think this would be a great school to attend, especially if you like the state of Michigan a lot."
"amazing..they got back to me a week later and I plan to attend this school."
"It was great - I really recommend trying this school out - no one had anything negative to say and everyone was really great to be around - very positive."
"My interviewer was awesome...real laid back and extremely nice. She didn't want to make it stressful and overall I was impressed with the school. "
"I love this school and although I have interviews at 4 other schools I am canceling them because UDM is my first choice. I love that they are always keeping me updated on my application through the mail and also that the school itself never acts like its too good for anyone. For example, rather than saying "Your DAT score is too low for us, you'll never get in" they suggest that you probably were not as prepared as you could have been and they would like to see you take the test again and improve. YES ITS IN A BAD AREA but that is an asset because of all the patients that come to the school for care. You get an amazing clinical experience compared to other schools. I was accepted 3 days after my interview."
"the dental school is getting old, but they are moving to a different campus in two years. the clinic is really nice, fairly new. they treated me very nicely, the students were all really nice."
"I feel the interview went great and it was such a relaxing experience. I was not nervous at all and normally I freak out. I was only asked a few questions and then we pretty much just talked so don't be nervous!"
"It was a wonderful interview experience. More like a conversation, my interviewer basically wanted to get to know a little bit about me, and then give me the opportunity to ask as many questions as I wanted. It was truly informative!"
"Excellent"
"Overall the interview was really laid back. The professor I interviwed with was really nice. I heard if you get a interview with U of D your pretty much garanteed admission."
"The interview was great, the faculty member was very nice and I really enjoyed talking to him, my questions were answered very well"
"I like the school! It is definitely one of my top choices. Much more impressive then the Internet site sell it to be. The staff was very warm, and the school seems to have the students as the top priority. "
"I was positive I wouldn't get in, but a few days after my interview the dean called to congratulate me, it's a good school with a big waitlist. "

"Please change the supplemental payment and picture submission to online form. Sending by mail can be very slow and can get lost at time."
"Expensive secondary application fee and mailing the 1x1 passport photo was a hassle."

"There needs to be a lunch break half way through the interview. Maybe some kind of lunch & learn."
"Give folders"
