About the School
Established in 1964, the University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences (COMLS) is a public medical school located on the Health Science Campus in Toledo, Ohio. Originally founded as the Medical College of Ohio, it merged with the University of Toledo in 2006, becoming an integral part of the university system. The college offers a range of programs, including the Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree, dual-degree programs such as MD/PhD, MD/MBA, MD/MPH, and MD/JD, as well as graduate degrees in biomedical sciences. COMLS is committed to improving health in the communities and region it serves by educating excellent clinicians and scientists, providing patient-centered and high-quality care, and producing nationally recognized research in focused areas.
Curriculum
The MD curriculum at COMLS, known as “Rocket Medicine,” is a competency-based, longitudinally connected program designed to develop students into lifelong, master adaptive learners. The curriculum is structured into three phases: an 18-month preclinical phase emphasizing system-based learning and early clinical experiences; a clerkship phase with rotations in core disciplines such as family medicine, internal medicine, neurology, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, psychiatry, and surgery; and a final year focusing on advanced clinical experiences, including acting internships and emergency medicine rotations . This integrated approach ensures that graduates are prepared to provide equitable, high-quality care in diverse healthcare settings.
Facilities
COMLS boasts state-of-the-art facilities to support medical education and research. The Interprofessional Immersive Simulation Center is a three-story, 65,000-square-foot facility that integrates a progressive anatomy and surgical skills center, an advanced clinical simulation center, and a virtual immersive reality center, making it the first in the nation to combine these three simulation centers . Additionally, the college houses core research facilities, including the Electron Microscopy and Histopathology Core Facility, which provides custom histology, immunohistochemistry, and electron microscopy services to investigators . These facilities enhance the hands-on learning experience and support cutting-edge research initiatives.
Demographics
The entering MD class of 2024 at COMLS comprised 176 students, with 67% being Ohio residents and 28% hailing from Northwest Ohio. The class was nearly evenly split by gender, with 52% male and 47% female students. Notably, 17% of the students were first-generation college students . The college is dedicated to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment, aiming to recruit and retain underrepresented groups in medicine, including racial and ethnic minorities, first-generation college students, and those from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds. This commitment is part of the college’s strategic plan to create a student body that reflects the demographics of the population it serves, thereby helping to reduce healthcare disparities.

Why no Tier Rankings?
Although we could tier rank, over the past 25 years we've found no compelling benefit for ranking schools. Students are most successful when they prioritize personal and academic fit over school rank.
