Just wanted to get everyone's opinion about which school they think is better academically and then for overall reputation.

Thanks!

Where do you WANT to go? This is only a question YOU can answer. Perhaps this should be better posed to your family and friends who actually know you rather than an anonymous internet forum.

I am being blunt, but the difference between the schools is minimal at best and the price range would be as well if I remember how much each cost.

Where did you feel most comfortable?

Where do you want to spend the next 4 years?

Only you can answer them.

well i think it would come down to comparing cities.

milwaukee isn't as big of a town, but it'll be cheaper to live in. if you want, you could always go to chicago or even minneapolis/st.paul. it's also in the northern part of the midwest, which means cold.

GW is in dc which is a major city. plenty of museums, restaurants, etc. of course there is also more crime. but...mass transit is available. the metro is just awesome. the weather is more humid and hot.

i never visited GW's campus so i dunno the facilities. MCW has a 2 year old med school building and it is the major hospital in the region (trauma I).

Thanks for posting futryfisician and Oldman. :)
Both of your comments were helpful....I have been leaning towards MCW for several reasons. The facilities were new and beautiful vs. GW rather old and rundown. Cost of attending MCW is around $42,000/year and GW is $56,000! <img border="0" alt="[Wowie]" title="" src="graemlins/wowie.gif" /> Obviously living expenses are greater in DC then WI. MCW is ranked(I think..or was last year anyway)and is much more research-oriented and GW is not.. (not that being top-anything matters to me..but reputations are important to a degree and having gone to a no-name undergrad, I want to take reputations into consideration too). These are clear differences that should help me in deciding..but both of these schools have some common qualities which are making me second guess.
Both GW and MCW have great clinical training (GW has a very public-service/humanitarian oriented teaching style and a brand new hospital which is going to be amazing to work in! plus the location ensures diversity of cases)I believe (have heard) that MCW has very strong clinical training also as oldman implied. The other thing is that my sister will be attending Penn State in Hershey, and GW will be much closer then MCW. That is the sticking point.

Anyway...I am still thinking about it..but please keep posting your
opinions, especially if you've visited both schools.

Thanks! :)

I'd go with MCW and argue the difference between the two academically is not minimal.

Can you be happy in a suburb of Milwakee? D.C. rocks if you like big cities. GW has awesome clinical experience, including the first two years, MCW doesn't have any the first two years. Reputation...U.S. News ranked MCW cause they have fat research money, GW doesn't hide the fact they aren't a research based school. If research is very important to you, go to MCW.

But when you compare match lists (both are available through admissions), you'll see that both schools send kids all over the country, including California, and both schools have docs landing residencies in places like UCSF and Hopkins. One matches better in Wisconsin, the other better in D.C. What a big surprise  So the academic difference is negligable. As it is with nearly all medical schools outside the top tier.

As for teaching...GW has a more integrated approach, with a little PBL/Case based stuff. MCW is pure lecture. Again, your decisions.

But, I think the biggest differences between these too is the midwest vs east coast. Which do you prefer?

I chose MCW over GW for several reasons, most of which are personal. 1) I don't like the east coast. Washington DC sounds like an exciting city to live in, but it seems too exciting. I don't wanna be in the center of all the politics. 2) I liked the small town atmosphere of MCW. 3) I liked the idea of having a car. 4) MCW is a lot cheaper than GW.
