Is My Career Over (License Issues)

From what I've seen in my forensic work, police departments are obligated to provide case material upon request. I see this ALL the time in a contractual government agency that requires police and arrest records for fitness work I do. If they're stonewalling you stating that a 'subpoena' is...

How does the system deal with violent mentally ill persons?

I'm just in shock that a patient was stable for three weeks in the hospital and had no discharge plan. Now they want the bed and everyone is scrambling? Does he have pending criminal charges? Sounds most likely like "yes." In that case, the answer is "none of the above" and he is discharged...

    DSM-V to remove multi-axial system

I was hoping against hope that they would banish all references to Axis IV and V to the depths of hell. So what do they do instead? Take the three most important axis, combine them, and keep IV and V delineated so that we are tortured by them for another 12 years?

    Forensic psychiatry licensing question

I do enjoy it, though in my current situation, I provide about 80% criminal forensic service, and about 20% private practice, which entails civil forensic work and run-of-the-mill outpatient office cash-based psychiatry.

    Forensic psychiatry licensing question

I am a forensic psychiatrist. Only certain states have laws that require that you be licensed in order to provide expert testimony. In other cases, the state medical board must be notified if you are to provide expert medical opinion in their state in which you do not hold a license. Nobody...

    Obamacare's effects on Psychiatry

It will happen. But not for a bit. They are already testing the waters with state licensure being dependent on acceptance of Medicare, for example. This bill from 2010 in Mass, for example, tied licensure to acceptance of medicare. As we know, this model was the model base for Obamacare...

What's the first thing you're going to buy...

Hi OPD, Indeed I am (back), though the forensic world certainly has not slowed. Just have my life arranged at this point so that there is a few free minutes a day I suppose. Glad to see some still familiar faces here. Hope all is well on your front.

    This Guy?

Competency is a fluid thing. There are standards that must be met in the state of Florida both for representing oneself, and for competency to stand trial. The standards themselves are different. If the questions of competency is again raised, he is again sent back for more treatment, if the...

Psychology degree positive on CV for Psychiatry?

I'm pretty sure that my Master's degree in psychology was a contributing factor in the medical school admissions process. In retrospect, I think it made me look like someone quite dedicated to the field. Silly them.

What's the first thing you're going to buy...

I bought a bunch of guns and a Challenger R/T Classic. Though that certainly wasn't all with the first paycheck.

    malpractice insurance

It will completely depend on the state and region in which you practice. I live in Palm Beach County, FL. Full time 2nd year attending malpractice is around 5k. If I move down 20 miles to Broward or Miami-Dade county, it doubles. The point being, it's entirely controlled on where you...

    malpractice insurance

There are deep discounts for residents performing moonlighting in psychiatry. It's not too cost-prohibitive if you stay within the parameters of the discount policy. The former APA-approved insurance was The Psychiatrists' Program: http://www.psychprogram.com/ The APA recently dropped...

    Psych Salary in Fl???

It depends on what patients you choose to take and what area. South Florida, where money exists (Palm beach, Miami, etc) can command 200+. Rural areas, less so. Hospitals in Florida are paying between 160-210k depending on the area.

Is extreme religious fanatisism ever treated by physchiatrist?

Spoken like a true Randian. I find this thread interesting, because it spills out even into the field of forensic psychiatry, where I spend nearly all my time. I am looked upon to restore competency (to stand trial) to those who essentially fail outpatient restoration programs. In other...
