    [2017-2018] Emergency Medicine Application Thread

Can't speak for other programs, but we usually get a few cancelations in late December and early January. You have to be ready to move on those, as the slots won't stay open long.

    Mandatory Video Interview

As mentioned above, PDs/aPD have public told each other that the SVI is going to have little weight. Personally, I actually plan to watch some of the very high and very low SVI scores and compare them to residents that I have worked with. I'm mostly curious to form my own opinion of the score...

    Not allowed to attend orientation?

It may not be up to the PD. The PD is the person's supervisor, but not the boss. The PD runs the residency, but cannot directly hire or fire anyone; that is a function of GME. As far as GME is concerned, the person can't fulfill their contract. That person is no longer their problem. However...

[2016-2017] Emergency Medicine Rank Order List Thread

I feel for you. Back in the day, I matched below where I expected and my wife cried. It honestly has worked out far better than I ever could have imagined. We are far better off than we would have been in the other city and we are still here. If you had told me that on Match day back then, I...

    SOAP 2017 Thread

Have you verified you are eligible for a license in the states you applied? Many states have a 7 year time limit between starting and completing the Steps. While there is additional time allowed for those with graduate education, I believe those are mostly for MD/PhD programs. If that was the...

Fired from residency program. What do I do now?

This is a bad place to be. The road back is possible, but very difficult. 1) You need to self report to your state medical board. Your program will likely report you anyway. You will need to enter treatment and monitoring. Goal number one is to save your license eligibilty. 2) You can appeal...

Toxicology Board Prep...Can you throw us a rope?

I found the Tox Boards to be very Buzzword heavy. I actually blew through the first half in under 2 hours. The board review course was very helpful and I made flash cards out of much of the material. I also read a fair amount of Rom and didn't find it that useful (but I know a lot about...

Have you been reading the CORD listserve? This has been a hot topic over the last few days.

    Tox Reimbursement

I collect on average, around $36 per consult. That includes the uninsured patients where my actual collections for all them, in aggregate is $0.00 over the last 3 years. I do a little legal work, but I can't live off of it. One of my colleagues does quite a bit, but still keeps his day job.

    Bug-out bag?/Doomsday prepping?

The first step is to identify your threats. These will be different for everyone. My two biggest fears I have are loss of water and a cold snap with loss of power combined with impassible roads (think ice storm in -20). So, I have a 55 gallon drum of water in the basement with the ability to...

Getting out of jury duty in residency

I had the displeasure of sitting on the jury of a "capital" murder trial as an attending. Of the 15 of us (12 + 3 alternates), only 2 did not have a college degree. Half of the remaining had additional education over the BA. (capital for Michigan as there is no death penalty here)

What would you do with a 1 year break in training?

If this is a real question, in the sense that you are asking for advice on what to do, you need to do anything you can to be in a prelim program.
