GP only doing ortho, residency worth it?

I’m a GP who has been out about 13 years. I’ve had a very non-traditional GP career path I assume. I have never really liked general dentistry when I got out of school, and even really considered switching careers. Anyone going through this in the forum I really do commiserate with you as I have...

    Chance for OMFS

I will describe my experience, and maybe it could help you some… Long story short I practiced as a GP for a while. I fell in love with doing orthodontics, and even worked in a few ortho practices as an associate. I really wanted to go back to residency and got into a couple programs (a few of...

Lol no bank. Its either you pay the money, someone pays for you, or you use their 8% loans to cover half the cost and you pay the other half. Don’t forget you gotta live the 3 years you’re there too

I guess that depends on your circumstance. Are you fresh out of school? Then ortho is the way to go because you have more time. Been a GP for 10 years? Better to stay a GP and do some ortho CE because it will take a long time to break even on your investment (500k plus not working as a GP for 3...

Nope 3 cycles I had 1 interview but did not match. On the plus side I paid off all my student loans and have about 500k in savings. I guess I’m just torn between keeping the money invested and letting it grow vs using it for GSO. Might be a better return on investment keeping it invested for 30...

Hi all, I’ve applied about 5 cycles now and haven’t match anywhere. Is it worth it for me to go to Georgia if I can go in? I will not have any loans.

Is Georgia School of Orthodontics worth it for all my savings?

How much do international dentists expect to make by completing an orthodontic residency at GSO? They must assume the ROI is there to work in the US if they are to pay over 600k for the orthodontics degree.

Help me determine my future SDN! Ortho residency or not

Seem to be getting more NO votes, almost a 50-50 split. If you voted no what is your reasoning?

Help me determine my future SDN! Ortho residency or not

I mean it’s all semantics, don’t read too much into it. I’ve been at this gig for 10 years, I’ve seen and experienced most things GP. Most patients are neutral, some happy, few bad apples. No denying many patients are afraid and tense which does impact your own psyche at times. Across the board...

Help me determine my future SDN! Ortho residency or not

Yes I’ve been an associate since I got out of dental school after a GPR. I’ve made decent money, paid off my debts, saved some, but I can tell any young dentist or dental student being a GP is tough, hard work. It is hard physically and mentally. It just wears on you after a while emotionally...

Help me determine my future SDN! Ortho residency or not

Appreciate it, thanks. Sometimes I think opportunity costs are a wash. If I stay as a GP I would probably cut back to part time lowering my income. It’s common sense, but the more you enjoy something the more you’ll do it and it wont seem as bad.

Help me determine my future SDN! Ortho residency or not

I would if I found a good one to buy, otherwise my plan is to associate out of residency. I wouldn’t mind spending the $$ if it was a solid practice. She is very supportive.
