IMHO, from experience, anything over a 1 hour commute tends to have large negative effects on my self-care and happiness, in one way or another. I'd go with the less commute if possible--you'll thank yourself later. Especially if starting a family is a priority to you.

Just my two cents, but I think an LCSW can be a very versatile degree and your degree of success will depend highly on how good you are at marketing, what your niche is, whether you see children or adults, and how competent you are. I have friends who are social workers who make 40k and others...

@psy2019 , does it make the debt a lot more manageable if you stick with the VA for a while and do a loan repayment program? Not sure how they work exactly but I imagine the VA would be highly desirable for people who attended professional schools to offset debt?

I think it requires some reflection on your part to think about your goals for graduate school. Do you want to be a clinician? A researcher? Is going to a top name institution important to you (perhaps it might be a super high stress environment). I agree with everyone else--fit is key
