    PEM fellowship 2022!!!

Our PD told us that we got over 100 applicants this year for 3 spots. I would guess most programs are the same so imagine invites are going to be delayed.

How much weight does Gold Humanism Society carry?

It is an award. The award itself probably doesn’t matter, other than you are decent. My CV has my previous jobs of being a truck driver for job experience and i put somewhere on there “Driver of the Year” which I got at 2 different companies a total of 4 times. The award in medicine means...

Do not go into Emergency Medicine

You say that EM is not right for 90% of applicants. I guarantee that 90% of the people reading this are thinking “I am part of the 10% it is right for.”

    Board Questions

I am in PEM and love tox but I don’t think a fellowship is in my future. I still like reading and learning. Rosh Review has great resources for EM and PEM for board study. Is there a book or a resource that is a ton of questions to hit the high and medium points in toxicology? Thanks.

Do you notice any difference in competence/motivation between the prelims and the categorical interns?

When I was in residency, most of the TYs were going into super competitive specialities so they ran circles around some of the interns. I loved the TYs in general because of that. Prelims were often fighting for a spot as well so they were hard workers. But our program didn’t have prelim...

    High flow nasal cannula

I was more talking bronchiolitis. I have used HFNC on a total of like 5 people over age 2.

    High flow nasal cannula

So in other words, NIV does nothing to prevent kids from being intubated but it seems to make us all feel like we are doing something?

DO student matriculant - drug test

Sure but if they think of you as less competent, who cares? It is admissions. You won’t deal with them ever again as a group and your professors likely won’t remember they interviewed you. And if they act on it, that would be highly illegal as discrimination. So either way, this will be behind...

DO student matriculant - drug test

I have had lots of blue-collar jobs in the past and every single drug test that I’ve taken, they request a list of prescription medications. Just tell them you have a prescription and you will be fine.

Good book to read on how to smash audition rotations?

If looking like a stud in a specialty is possible with a quick read, your specialty sucks. Just go in ready to learn. If you portray you know it all, you are probably going to be less successful.

MD How feasible is going into pediatrics with 260k+ debt?

I think you are worrying a little too early. The debt is non negotiable because that is the place you are going. That side is done. As a pediatrician, I don’t envy my surgical speciality colleagues or the cardiologists making $600k+ per year. I hope they are all crazy successful in what they...

MD Serious Question: Is there a fairly legitimate online quiz to help decide which specialty is right for you?

These also don’t account for what you want. I remember before medical school I was interested in surgery and EM. Every single speciality quiz I took ask questions like do you want a quick answer or a slow answer, do you want to use your hands or your mind, etc. Given my priming it was no...

    Breakups common?

Yep. I saw a ridiculous number of divorces in med school. So much so that the joke was actually making it through med school. Would love to give you a feel good ending to this. Sorry.

Did the 60 minutes talk about how few people detransition? As you practice medicine, you will see that most of the stuff we do in medicine doesn’t have robust data on outcomes. Do I think some practitioners are jumping to stuff too fast? Maybe. But I also can’t imagine continuing to live in a...
