Incoming MS1 gunning for Ortho w/ low MCAT

Similar story here. My MCAT score was basically the bare minimum needed for MD admission. State med school. Worked really hard for step 1 and I matched. Along with research, clinical performance, step 2 performance, subIs/away rotations. It's 100% hard work. The MCAT has very little predictive...

Specialities where 30-40 hours is possible, happy with 80-120K per year

I'm not sure why no one has mentioned this, but orthopedics being a high paying specialty does not equal it being a lifestyle specialty. I guess you could work less, but the vast majority of orthopedic surgeons work a lot. Also, if you are worried about residency as a part of the equation...

    Interest in Sports Medicine

The same recommendations you will hear for anyone shooting for a highly competitive specialty: high board scores (step 1 and 2), research (preferably ortho), get to know your home department, shoot for AOA, and do several away rotations. Get an ortho residency spot and then focus on sports...

Why do students tend to favor Surgical subs > General?

True. Also, gen surg is a lot of guts, pus, and poop. No thanks :barf:

    Very uneasy about specialty choice

Not the case at my institution, it seemed like almost every peds resident was planning on having kids, was pregnant, or had kids already. They even count the resident's care of their child as a newborn rotation... They are second only to OBYGN in terms of number of residents pregnant at one time!

    losing weight during intern year

After 2 days of intern year my cumulative food intake was 2 protein bars, a nectarine, a few bites of a breakfast sandwich, and a handful of soybeans. Clearly I need to get better at this or I will be losing weight this year. :(

How do you guys live during the summer?

Same. Another option is to take a course through your school so that you are a student, which allows you to qualify for financial aid. Obviously a paid position is preferred, but you can talk to your school about other options too.

Is Sketchy Still Relevant for Step 1?

Pretty sure every point I got for bacterial micro was a direct result of sketchy (I took it as they were releasing the viruses and before fungi/parasites) and micro/immunology was one of my higher sections. Sketchy is gold! Y'all don't know how lucky you are to have sketchy pharm.!

Why is Step 1 so important?

I have to think it's indicates how hard students are willing to work for something (and that something is standardized). People can complain about the merit of using it to differentiate candidates, but at the end of the day it's still an easy way to sort through >10x the number of apps for 60...

How accurate is AAMC Medical Specialty test?

I think mine said I should do allergy/immunology, nephrology, or aerospace medicine. I matched ortho. And I also hate nephrology like you wouldn't believe!

Career Change - Seeking Post Bacc Advice

I had zero science background and went to Bennington (graduated from medical school last month). PM with with any questions at all! Your post demonstrates significant maturity and understanding for your position in this process. Congrats on getting that far! Good luck!

    OMG Video Secondary????

There were a handful of ortho programs that did video interview this cycle too. They were beyond awkward. Especially if you try to do them post call and the laptop program doesn't work so you have to use the app on your phone because clicking on the link starts a 72 hour clock and your call...

    Disability Insurance

Not everyone going into ortho is a man ;) Thanks for the resource, though. This helped me get in contact with an insurance agent that was able to answer all my questions.

    Disability Insurance

Hi all, Incoming ortho intern, here. I just got a quote for disability insurance today (in addition to the GME coverage offered through my program) and it was a bit of a kick in the gut. $100/month for $3K/month coverage. With my budget already planned down to the dollar this premium is more...
