If you do residency in Canada, pass American specialty board exam & practice in the US -- can you practice in Canada later with no Royal College exam?

The details really matter. Make sure you're contacting the respective boards directly before you commit to a plan. And remember, even with the best planning rules can change.

If you do residency in Canada, pass American specialty board exam & practice in the US -- can you practice in Canada later with no Royal College exam?

I don't know about the other boards, but for orthopaedics the ABOS requires that Canadian applicants have passed the Royal College before they'll let you sit even the first step of their 2 step boards (the American board exams are a 2-step 3-5 year process). They don't accept simply completing a...

US general surgery resident (US MD) preparing to go back to Canada to practice

    1) ideally train where you want to practice. 2) don't forget the principles of surgery exam (Royal college PGY-2 exam) if you're going for a full licence and not 3rd pathway.

    POS exam ?

You're going to have a tough time getting those materials. One of the ways Canada differs from the US is that the majority of the review materials are held privately and passed down within residency programs. The closest public resource is this book: The first 10 or so chapters (not the...

Americans thinking that Canada is easier, read this!!!

Yes. This is a common problem. 36MCAT and a 3.5 GPA from an Ivy? They'll laugh at you. 30 MCAT but a 4.3 from Brock geology? Hello Canadian doctor!

Vacant Residency Spots in Canada: Where are they published?

I'd make yourself known to program directors by email in advance of the post-match. Actually, do it any time of year. If there's a vacancy a program will want o try to fill it ASAP. Mid year hires aren't unheard of. The absolute best is if an MD known to the program writes in for you. Much...

Please help understand the path back to Canada after US education

Ok, I found HFO pretty obtuse when I was going through the process, but fair enough things may have changed in the last few years. My issue was that you'd get to a certain point and then they'd claim ignorance as they can't address any specific circumstances and only supply general information...

Please help understand the path back to Canada after US education

HFO may help for Ontario but not for other provinces.

How much do grades matter for Irish medical students wishing to come back to North America?

They don't matter at all to North American programs (they won't even know how to read them). However, some schools allocate reciprocal elective spots based on your exam scores and your class rank gets submitted to ERAS as far as I understand.

Canadian doing Residency in U.S on J1 - Can I do Fellowship in Canada?

No RCPSC is the specialty licensing college, they'd certify your psych training not your basic medical qualifications (that's the MCC exam series which is equivalent to the USMLEs). Usually if you're getting an academic license for a fellowship you don't need RCPSC certification BUT it might...

Canadian doing Residency in U.S on J1 - Can I do Fellowship in Canada?

Yes the UK medical school does make a difference for full licensure but probably not for fellowship. We get fellows from the UK all the time.

Please help understand the path back to Canada after US education

I just posted this on another thread. Might be helpful: I wouldn't rely on help from SDN alone. There are three different bodies you need to check with directly. If I were you I'd start with the provincial licensing authorities (like State boards)...

    European branches of royal college

It's possible to get your training recognized but not automatic. If you want to practice there you need a GMC license (like the MCC and provincial college combined). If you didn't go to medical school in the EU, then you might need to write the PLAB (similar to the MCCQE1). After that's...
