    Regional Ultrasound Anesthesia

Highland is probably the ED that does it the most right now, so definitely attend lectures / courses that their faculty are part of. One of them has also just moved to Brigham and Women's, and it will be interesting to see if any courses will be held on the east coast. Yale throws out a couple...

    Failed Step 1 Twice

Would be very difficult, but not impossible. I know someone who failed step 1 twice, who matched into EM this year. Besides the step 1, everything else in the cv is exemplary. Groomed for research (multiple papers since undergrad) + already has an MPH that is backed up with very meaningful...

Any success stories of completing Intern year, and then matching in the US?

Forgot to mention, I matched into EM. One of my other US colleagues who stayed intern year with me also matched EM. The third one matched IM. A fourth one who stayed longer in Ireland than the rest of us matched IM.

Any success stories of completing Intern year, and then matching in the US?

This is what I did. I had all my USMLE's done before intern year and could have matched, but I wanted to stay for the intern year for a variety of reasons (pay was good at the time, registration with the irish medical council) and it was a very good year. In my year (2007), 3 of us did this...

Obama or Romney Poll: ER attendings

...but I need someone to tell me how to vote... so I don't think the poll is too off the mark? I'm going to vote the way SDN does :).

    Medicolegally superior charting.

we're fortunate to have an MD/JD in our department. The AMA means squat unless you add things to it. Just saying "patient understood risk, etc." is not enough and may not hold up in court. Things that are helpful to document are: patient has capacity (GCS) and demonstrates capacity for...

    Foreign Bodies in the Ear

have had some success with regular lido. Caution not to use viscous lido or use sparingly. It suffocates the roaches but then makes them so soft that they break in many pieces when you're trying to dig them out after.

New Study: EM physicians significantly higher rate of burnout than other MDs

Yes, on many days there is less of a wait time (less acuity) than at the other site. That is a good point.

New Study: EM physicians significantly higher rate of burnout than other MDs

I fortunately work at a place that doesn't seem to put too much weight on PG scores. Obviously to the hospital it matters a bit, but everyone in our dept including our chair recognizes it's a crap way to assess people and there's so many confounding and false variables. I can call out the pain...

New Study: EM physicians significantly higher rate of burnout than other MDs

Hmm that's not great, zanegrey and trumpet. I thought 170-190k was fairly standard for academic jobs even in the northeast (which tends to be the lowest paying region in the country). If you're in a community setting but earning academic pay (or less), find a new job? Not getting 200k for 15...

    The Enemies of Flow

Thumbs up for the original post. We call it "bolusing" patients. You can hear cries of "G__ DAMN it I got bolused AGAIN???!" with then angry call to the triage nurse. High turnover is good, but getting bolused with 10 patients instead of having them spaced out puts me into cursing mode. We do...

    Radiologist seeking EM residency

I think in the current climate, there is more radiologist interest in seeking other career pathways. In-patient radiology is in some places losing out to teleradiology groups. Residencies are closing. Graduating radiology residents are being forced to take very low-paying fellowships. The...
