How much are W2 benefits worth?

$30 an hour?!?! I work 200 hrs/month = 200 x 30 = $6,000 a month x 12 months = $72,000 Currently I pay: $4,500 a year for health insurance $468 a year for life insurance Don't have disability Malpractice covered by employer So for me to "replace" my current level of benefits it would cost $2...

Buying a house- use physician loan or the normal 20% down?

Thats not always true. I just got a loan that had the exact same interest rate. With that being said, your second point is very true. I got a 10 ARM, I doubt I'll be in it much longer than 10 years.

    Oral board prep

I didn't do a course and did fine. Go through the first 1/3 of Okuda book and develop a system to use on all cases. You will be fine.

El Camino Hospital ED doc fired

I just always assume I'm being recorded. And I purposely make a pretty boring viral video. When patient realizes you aren't going to play their game, eventually they will get up and leave. Especially when you cut off their room service (i.e. sandwiches, drinks, meds, etc).

Employee job w/ some locums on the side

Locum companies typically will provide malpractice. Or charge you a $/hr to provide it. Getting your own malpractice is like getting your own car insurance. Shop a few companies and pick the one you want to go with. But similar to car insurance, if you (drive) work only a couple days a month...

Tips and tricks to negotiate a contract?

It depends on the market. If they are desperate then maybe they will change a little on the rate...but otherwise probably not. They aren't going to pay you more than everyone else. Try to negotiate on things like: CME money Schedule preferences Guaranteed number of shifts Sign on Bonus money...

Substance abuse question on licensing application

Don't lie on it, just explain what you did above. And no you cannot transfer your license. You get to go through the same process for each and every state you want to be licensed.

    Finding a Good Locums Gig

Its going to depend on your state and malpractice history. States like Texas can be real cheap. I had my own policy last year and it was ~$15K/year. I'd imagine states like NY and PA could be double or triple that at least.

    Advice Choosing Job

Except it's not 150K Benefits are probably worth $10-20/hr. So $70/hr really a spread. Now those dollars are going to be taxed at 35-40+%. So probably closer to ~$70,000 take home difference.

I'm about to be an intern. What should I know so I don't harm patients?

Be open to learning from everyone. Your attendings, fellow residents, nurses, RTs, etc, etc. The more people you learn from early on...the easier it is to develop your own style of doing things as a senior resident/new attending. Shows up on time (or early), stay late (if needed), do your...

I was considering taking the neurosurgery boards just for fun.

job options for a MD without residency?

Training sucks. You gotta jump through the unreasonable hoops. Hopefully you knew that before you started this journey. It's way better as an attending, if you ran into that issue as an attending, you just find a new job, with a emergency backup/call schedule, problem solved. Or just avoid the...

What's your plan for an active shooter in your ED?

Well I have a city police officer in my ED. So hopefully the shooting wouldn't last long. But if I wasn't armed I try to run or hide. Its going to be a losing battle to go against someone who has a gun (if you are unarmed). After the threat is cleared by PD, then you can try to help victims.

Anyone else see this facile article on tPA in the New York Times?

Thrombolytics for Stroke – TheNNT I am not a believer, however, I don't practice on an island. It is standard of care, I offer it and have no problem giving it after informed consent.
