Recent JAMA article on Intention to Leave Academic medicine

(I'm not from the US, am a urologist, dropped-out a physiology PhD in 6th year - just before the defence, now have my private office) My 2 cents: staying in academia means a quite extended adolescence.

    What are my chances?

You are far better than a lot of people who are entitled associate professors in Turkey. I hope you match into the urology program. You are great :thumbup::thumbup:

    Retrograde access?

OK, I'm not a stone guy; contrarily I hate stone procedures. I particularly hate how I feel limited using a flexible renoscope during the RIRS or using a regular nephroscope doing a PCNL. However, I suppose if you can do retrograde access, thus you should have a good intrarenal space, and...

    fellowship options and market

(I'm not from the US) Agree with @cpants and I suppose you can make a good deal with general urology + some self-specialization. One "off-the-record" advantage is you can also refer problematic patients to an academic center :D

Colostomy take-down, 2 surgeons working together. Stapler gets put in vagina and is anastamosed to the colon.

These things happen, unfortunately. Once I forgot a sponge, for instance.

    Peds uro - jobs

I hope you get a good spot @omegalomaniac ..... and we will have another bro, to whom we can send our failed hypospadias cases :D :D :D Joking aside, ped urology was one of my major work-load while I was in a tertiary referral healthcare center (now I am in a small private). Testis stuff...

Book/Reference for Sutures, Instruments, Etc. in 2020

Good topic, thanks heartily  I suppose most of us experienced similar situations. Firstly, there is a "in charge problem" in surgery. When you are the chef, you get out of the rules. Of course you should not, but in practice it is very common. So there are some surgeons around use X or...

    Urology Possibilities as an IMG

@DoctwoB and @cpants thanks heartily for your responses. My main motivation is taking my children out of Turkey. I am also on the way to get GMC registration. On the other hand, I have an on-going Ph.D. that is thought to be finished next year. I may force some paths to get into the USA...

    Urology Possibilities as an IMG

@DoctwoB and @cpants : What are my chances as a 34 years old urologist (graduated in 2010 from med school. 2010-2016 residency. after then in practice) without any scores :) I mean can I find myself some spots if I can deal with the Step1, Step 2 CK, and CS.

    The academy way...

Hi again thanks for the feedback :D I decided to step back from the position. I agreed with a small private hospital. I am going to start there in the upcoming months. And for the PhD, I am waiting for some time. I am not sure bout that. That's all :)

Current academic environment unsupportive of MD/PhD aspiration

Not about methods for now, but I have just posted a thread about my problematic situation :)

    The academy way...

Dear colleagues, I want to ask about your idea about my current situation. Of course, some problems can be a matter of my current place (Turkey) or my personal problems (such as long time anxiety and obsessive personality); I'm very open to your critique, suggestions, and fun :) A little...

How can you tell when a student is "wrong" for surgery?

Exactly agree. In most of the situations, there is only one choice to do in an operation. So as surgeons, we are more technicians that magicians. The craft of the surgery lies in staying calm, learning from the available and well-grown knowledge, learning from experiences, being a compatible...

Current academic environment unsupportive of MD/PhD aspiration

I don't understand them quite often :) People are usually very good at creating a problem or agitating an existing one. To solve a problem or make an improvement is often tried to be blocked. This applies even to research. Most of my energy is spent on the ethical board application papers, to...
