Anyone working on or recently finished board recertification

I took my second recert exam 2 years ago going with the old, regular system. I'm not planning on recertifying again. It just adds very little to nothing to my daily practice of medicine and I feel the whole system needs to be changed. I am paying 2400$ for 2 modules to take a test at Pearson...

How much do you make in a year as a psychiatrist?

No, the state requires employers pay 50% of salary sent into the state pension fund only. It was much less when I started but was terribly underfunded, so has been raised over the past 15 years to 50%. I have 457, 401k and 401k Roth available (no matching) that I max out as well. I can retire...

Recommendations for child psychiatry program that meet specific criteria?

I doubt you'll find any with no call. Most will have you as 3rd line of call so it's rare to get called, but may have to do some inpt to be board eligible. I know you do have to complete some emergency type training to be board eligible (on call or ER rotation).

abilify to counteract prolactin increase with risperdal

We have a female patient now on Hafyera with prolactin over 200 and is asymptomatic. She is finally stable and has not done well on any other antipsychotics. We just added 2 mg Abilify and will check prolactin in 1 month- hoping it comes down as we all prefer not to switch, while quite nervous...

How much do you make in a year as a psychiatrist?

CMHC with 22 years time here as medical director working 40hr/week, all outpatient. $280k salary, 7 weeks PTO, plus employer pays into state retirement 50% of my salary (my state was horribly underfunded for years). I get 50% of highest pay until I die after 27 years total time here. If adding...

How much do you make in a year as a psychiatrist?

I'm not exactly sure how to answer regarding pay + benefits. Do I add in the 7 weeks of PTO?, What about the paid malpractice and other insurances, my employer's payments into our pension?

    Malpractice insurance

It's really cheap for psychiatry compared to most other specialties. I have the usual 1mil/3mil with tail and think it's only $7k per year with 22 years of practice in Child/Adol. I think it was just $1k my first year out of fellowship.

Child psychiatry fellowship: what mattered most to you?

I learned a lot from the usual inpt/outpt training the program required, but most of my learning was from moonlighting. My program allowed 1/2 day per week moonlighting in any state CMHC (without taking any PTO) and it was covered by the program's malpractice insurance. I would work from 12-7 pm...

What do medical students not ask about enough during residency interviews?

How do the attendings or program directors handle feedback? What is the program's pass rate for boards? What is the complete hierarchy for on call? I'd pay extra attention to how happy/unhappy ALL of the people you see appear to be. I remember some of the "big name" programs where the interns...

Which antidepressant is the safest to give with Vyvanse?

Yes, he was lethargic, not talking much, confused, not eating or sleeping--don't remember other specifics. He was usually VERY talkative, hyper, animated, interactive, etc. He and his parents all have lower IQ's so may not have expressed his symptoms well to ER, but I'd known him for 8 years and...

Our 2 local medical hospitals use Epic and sifting through their records is such a pain.

Which antidepressant is the safest to give with Vyvanse?

I've only seen it happen once in my 25 years of doing Child/Adol with someone taking a stimulant. It was from a big combination of meds- Vyvanse, Risperdal, and went to the ER due to vomiting and was given lots of Zofran. He was not aware he had serotonin syndrome, went back two more times to...

Am I prepared for child boards?

I did my recert 2 years ago and used old child PRITE exams. There were LOTS of questions directly from them and they were from 2000-2001. My initial C/A board cert exam was in 2002 so I was in-person for written test day 1, one video patient and one live patient on day 2. The written exam was...
