    Locums pay?

Anybody here do locums? Looking at doing some locums, particularly weekend coverage, maybe a week at a time, to supplement my salary. Trying to think of what a reasonable rate would be. It seems like, for this kind of coverage, they tend to reimburse per 24 hours of call. Was looking at...

Residents and attendings , your perspective on whether ortho is right for me, a small short man ?

Is your bench + step 1 > 500? Jk. Agree with everything above. Size can be an advantage at times (i.e. water-skiing on really obese patients) but by no means required. None of my residency classmates were large and they were fine. As far as judging hands - it's really hard to judge before...

"Good" Questions to ask during surgery

Depends on subspecialty. Skeletal trauma or r&g for trauma, green's for hand, man's for foot, etc. Yellow journal (jaaos) has lots of good review articles. Ask your resident beforehand and they should be able to help you out. At least review anatomy

"Good" Questions to ask during surgery

I'd recommend asking a question which shows that you have some sense of what's going on/ have done some reading and are interested in the surgeon's opinion on something controversial or learn about something you don't understand. For example - if you are doing an acl. You ask the surgeon - I...

Hello I am interested in ortho surgery but find the amount of books to master during residency overwhelming

While we have a stereotype as a specialty that doesn't read, nothing could be further from the truth. My first day working in ortho as a med student, the attending handed me a copy of greene's operative hand and said start reading. I can't say that I've read any textbook straight cover to...

    ...

I assume you have a good step 1 score? Step 2 will be way way more important i think after step 1 becomes p/f. I've found that a great step 2 can help offset a poor step 1. You want step 1 and 2 to be similar otherwise. A poor step 2 would hurt. Not sure how online rotations work but...

MD For guys, what kind of shoes to wear on wards?

Tennis shoes are great ... until somebody bleeds/pukes/etc on them. Boots are super comfortable and look sharp. Can be stain resistant. They're my go-to for "low-risk" environments. For the OR it's hard to beat Danskos. Bottom line - don't forget the cleanability factor.

    Is it fun?

When surgery goes well - best feeling ever. When surgery goes poorly - worst feeling ever. Lucky there's more of the former than latter for me.

    Fellowships

Generally speaking you're right. Something around 90% do a fellowship. If you want to be in a large urban area you pretty much have to do a fellowship. To practice in an academic center in these saturated markets it's not unheard of to do 2 fellowships to get a real niche (ie peds sports) If...

    Coolest parts of ortho

I agree with everything above ... but a cake analogy? Really? Not sports or (maybe) woodworking? How un-ortho!

MD Completing Two Surgical Residencies: Orthopedics and Neurosurgery

Bethesda/ Walter Reed (large military academic center) is one of the sites for osteointegration research. Not sure about where else, but it is still a small number and cutting edge. Very exciting though, saw a presentation about it. Still early though. 100% agree. I think the ortho- hand...

MD Completing Two Surgical Residencies: Orthopedics and Neurosurgery

If you're not even in need school yet there's really no point in going anywhere near this deep down the rabbit hole because you know nothing about what you want right now. First of all, you have no idea what specialty you want to do. You'll have a better idea after 3rd year. You intellectual...

Would anyone care if I sweat through scrubs?

I regularly sweat through my scrubs in the OR. Lead + hot lights + dad bod = lots of sweat. I regularly come out of cases looking like I've showered in my scrubs. A few times (if I need to see a consult immediately) I'll change, but usually I just dry off. If it bothers you, wear an...
