    Out-of-state vs in-state interviews for TY/Prelim

bro, just apply to all the programs you can, then cancel interviews as needed

Considering specialty switch - now vs after residency

Stay in your program, and reapply as a board certified doc later if you must. My advice -might- be different if you had matched at your #1 IM program, and had only applied IM. As a borderline applicant, be grateful for the moment that all your hard work was not for naught, and just reapply later...

    Lost a categorical spot I didn't know I had

I agree with the consensus here. I think there is only a 10% chance that you were actually ranked as the PD says. You 100% made the right move.

Substance abuse question on licensing application

It may be overly cautious, but from some of the licensing horror stories I have seen over the years, I personally think avoiding NM for now is a good idea.

Income based loan payments during research year?

It will possibly go to zero if you reach out to the loan company and prove you are not working as of June 2018. Or, when you file your 2018 taxes, your salary will be half of what you make now, so your income based payments will decrease for all of 2019.

Can I switch from an MPH to Post-bac premed program at same school?

Reach out to the post-bac program director. It might be too late, but there will be no harm done. I would not contact the MPH folks.

How much emergency fund and where to store it? (and other advice?)

I get 4.59% on up to $20,000 with this account: Free High Interest Checking | Waukegan, IL Rewards Checking | CCU All you need to do is join the credit union ($5), and apply for their credit card. You have to make 15 credit transactions per month with your debit card (I purchase fifteen 50 cent...

What Size External Monitors Do you guys Have?

I use two 27s and it's great. Four large browsers/programs all fit nicely, side-by-side, so there's never any flipping between programs.

Credit Cards and DTI (Debt-to-Income) Ratio

You just need to start with a few cards targeted for your stage of life (may not have 0% interest; may have low credit limits), but the student loan debt won't be an issue in general. You will definitely be declined if you declare zero household income, though. Your ability to obtain good cards...

COA >300k, prior student loan debt...

I think the bottom line is that this is what plans like REPAYE are for. In your situation, you will probably be better off accepting 10% of your salary as a tax to have the career that you want, rather than focusing on paying off the $600k debt. I'm sorry for your situation.

Credit cards, FICO, and average age

The thing is, the fewer accounts you have, the faster you reduce your average age of accounts as you add new ones. If this is the only thing you are going to do for 5-10 years, and you own your house and car, it makes no difference. But if you will ever need credit in the future, you could in...

Credit cards, FICO, and average age

Average age of accounts is actually a very significant factor in your credit score, and you can diminish it very quickly through closing old accounts and opening new ones. You might be better off with a 2% cash back card with no annual fee, but it sounds like you've done the math on the Sapphire...

Should I take a year off or match?

If you can swing it financially, it's only one year of your life. I'm not sure which person you are in the photo, but both of you look pretty young. Then just dual apply the following year. But you would need to move somewhere where you can do a TON of research, which will be a challenge in and...

    Dismissed from medical school,

Expulsion isn't the ONLY sanction available. Everyone acts as if these single acts are somehow proof of an immutably sick, morally bankrupt mind that must be weeded out of the profession immediately. I mean, people are literally bringing up "kiddie-diddlers" and someone who went on a drunken...
