    Would you recommend EM?

When I go back and think of the board scores I threw away on this specialty, it is depressing. But medicine is what it is. The honorable philosophical axioms of Hippocrates have all but been purged and we are just cowboys riding with the herd on a cattle ranch named taxation. In other news...

    I know I have been stupid---rheumatology

Not a Rheumatologist (EP), so I'm not entirely sure how locums works in your specialty but I know of an EP who rented out his house, he and his wife moved into a nice Class A motorhome, and followed the locums. It worked out well for them. Sorry for your loss, best wishes.

    EM to family med?

True. The one advantage the EM doc trying to practice FM has is that you know what to fear. You are not going to be the FM attending that sends a patient home on antacids only to have him die of a massive MI that evening (true story, happened to an attending when I was rotating in an FM clinic...

Being forced to work more due to a divorce

Married twice, divorced once. Both SAHMs. The first was a parasite. This one is awesome. Don't ignore any red flags (particularly selfishness or being a spendthrift) in dating relationships. Any red flags? Yes, any.

    Would you recommend EM?

With regards to the EM psych component... Do you like cats? How about rabid cats?

ERs hiring fewer docs to save money

Seriously? That's far worse than I could have possibly imagined it to have gotten.

Debating weather to do my residency in US or Ireland, thoughts and advice appreciated

Having worked both in the US and overseas after going to a US medical school and non-FP US residency, I'll disagree with those who suggested you go to the US. There was an era where doctors flocked from the UK and Canada to private practices in the United States. That era is largely over, and...

Is residency and medical school worth it?

Medicine as a field generally sucks. Residency is just the start of that suck. If you're in a position where you don't need to practice, then just go do an IM year somewhere and call it good.

    Co-resident not pulling weight

This is an excellent opportunity to learn that as a physician, nobody that you report to actually cares what you think. Keep your head down and power through.

How much would something like sovereign immunity be worth to you?

Practicing in a low med mal/soverign immunity environment changes how you practice. You cut way back on defensive medicine. Your charting changes. You're far more efficient. You sleep better at night knowing that unless you really screwed something up, that you won't ever hear about what...

You escaped...and by escaping you won.

How much time do we have?

Going forward you're either going to have to specialize, or go into something like IM/FP that will allow you to have a cash or concierge practice as this increasingly goes towards medicare for all.

    A Question For Current Residents

I was wondering this the other day, so I decided to ask. The answers are anonymous, but elaborate by posting a response if you wish.

    Moonlighting

Remember that the prevalance of a disease is the prevalance the disease. While being in a lower volume department may reduce the absolute chance that something shows up at your door, it does not eliminate it. Level I & II traumas, Strokes, Pelvic Bleeds, MIs all can and will show up just not...

    TeamHealth Contract Negotiations and Revisions

I'd recommend this. 90 days is a long time if the environment of a department goes bad. If you can get 30/30, that is ideal. Others may disagree, but I prefer a straight hourly rate to RVU based compensation for three reasons: (1) It eliminates the need for me to spend uncompensated hours...
