How did pathology fare in the 2024 match?

And this at least partially explains why more U.S. med students will enter pathology. It's not that pathology's situation is improving. Rather, the advantages of most other specialties are going away and they are joining us in the exploited camp.

    Pathologist misdiagnosis in the news

Some groups definitely have two pathologists entirely review one case for one bill. It's limited to certain specimen types (i.e. all breast biopsies, all prostate biopsies, etc)., but it certainly happens.

    Pathologist misdiagnosis in the news

You're right about confirming malignant diagnoses. But I would argue it's why having confirmation with a second pathologist on benign diagnoses is even more important. If you have an obvious malignancy and misgrade or even misclassify the tumor, it's not as egregious as missing the malignancy...

    Rural Job gets 25 Applications!

I interviewed for a similar job 15 years ago and was told by the recruiter that there were 50+ applicants. Look how far we've come.

Dermatopathology Job Market looking good !!! ($450k, with 2 years partnership track)

You are correct, a send out does not necessarily make a diagnosis correct. It does, however, make it difficult for anyone to accuse the sending pathologist of negligence, which is the important legal word.

    Jobs

For the record, I would consider myself a “have” in a lot of ways. I’m a partner in a stable group. But I sacrificed geographically for this and live hundreds of miles from family and desired location.

    Jobs

Playing the devil’s advocate, why should this adage people quote be the unquestioned expectation for pathologists? I think we all know doctors in [instert specialty] who are not affable, particularly available (except when it’s convenient for them) or especially able, and they are making bank in...

    How to discourage a doctor

Yes...however, we are at a distinct disadvantage due to the job market. It was fortunate that the ER, IM and critical care docs were the ones who were replaced, as I'm guessing most of them were able to find a suitable job without too much trouble to replace the one they just lost. If a whole...

2020 Match - Pathology Continues to be Less Competitive

This is a sad lie academic pathologists and residents tell themselves, often because they don’t know any better. It is a common refrain that there are no jobs here but this is a tight market because we have a big/multiple training programs nearby that flood the market. But no one has common...

2020 Match - Pathology Continues to be Less Competitive

I think this is the only hope. There are specialties where patients in need cannot see a doctor because there aren't any nearby or without a months-long waiting period. I have never heard of a patient waiting for a path report because there is no pathologist available to interpret it. It seems...
