Thoughts on SIR should IR leave DR talk

I think IR has a lot more to lose from an IR/DR split than DR does. The academic IRs who are pushing for the split will be fine in their 100% IR jobs at major medical centers. I can't say the same will be true for the majority of community practice IRs. This seems to be one of those ideas...

Can you actually be satisfied by doing 50% DR and 50% IR?

I do around 50/50 IR/DR. Both in my prior and my current practice, I read general radiology (I can read almost all XR/US/CT exams as well as quite a bit of MR), and I also practice high-end IR (I've done TACE/TIPS/BRTO/etc, most recently did a prostate artery embo yesterday, have a right heart...

It's official: AI is more accurate than radiologists when it comes to reading mammograms

It's pretty telling that speculation over AI taking over radiology is always propagated by non-radiologists who somehow know the actual practice and future course of radiology better than radiologists. I have yet to personally meet a radiologist who actually thinks AI is going to be taking over...

Radiology will be the most likely specialty to get affected by AI per ChatGPT

The bolded alone is very unlikely to happen within the next 10 years. The ability for AI to "interpret" CT/MR/US or even "just" radiographs is vastly overestimated. I say this as someone working in a group actively incorporating AI technology like Aidoc into our workflow.

Radiology will be the most likely specialty to get affected by AI per ChatGPT

I don't get it. Here we are, sitting around while you guys claim for years and years that AI will take over radiology. And yet, here we are, nowhere near that, while midlevels are taking over huge swaths of emergency medicine/primary care, non-surgical specialties are impressed by ChatGPT giving...

Effect of banking crisis and economic downturn on rads job market?

The job market can turn on a dime. Look at what happened to emergency medicine - the hottest specialty up until just the past couple years, when it suddenly crashed. I got lucky that I applied to radiology around 2012 when the job market was terrible and med students were avoiding radiology. By...

Radiologists, how much do you work per week?

I work around 40-45 hrs/week, but with the caveat that I also take IR call on top of that. That part's a gamble, but usually only involves coming in for a couple hours on a call weekend.

When a job listing says "call 1:4" does that mean 1 in 4 nights or weekends?

Caveat that DR call often also includes weeknights as well. It's rare, but someone needs to be the name on the call list to do, say, a pediatric fluoro exam for intussusception or midgut volvulus or the rare procedure that can't wait until the morning.

    Kaiser (Full CoA) vs Upitt

I am many years out of med school, but knowing what I know now, I have always been served well by prioritizing location and lifestyle over perceived intangible perceived benefits of one program over another. I ranked my residency based on the location I wanted to live, and now I am an attending...

    Derm vs rads?

I was previously in a practice where I got ~12 weeks off per year. I am now in a practice where I "only" get 8 weeks of vacation, but I get a half day off per week. As a result I have personal experience with both. Both are nice in their own ways. I traveled quite a bit when I had 12 weeks of...

    Derm vs rads?

I work in a group that covers both a large quaternary level care transplant and trauma academic center and smaller community hospitals. My days at the smaller community hospitals are very busy, and I read similar volumes to GadRads, and I read and do everything - CT/MR/US/XR/nucs in all...

    radiology questions

Salary range is around that of private practice, since it is a private practice that just happens to cover a teaching hospital.

    radiology questions

Don't necessarily need to choose between one or the other. There are hybrid academic/private practice groups out there, where you function as a private practice but also cover the major teaching hospital and are involved in the academic side of things including tumor boards, teaching...

    radiology questions

Okay so I get the impression that the two things you like about radiology are the lifestyle (hence your focus on teleradiology specifically) and the idea of radiology (you use all the buzzwords like tech and visualization that fascinates all med students). But I don't get the sense that you...
