    I work at a small office with no techs or autorefractor -- I use my ret on most patients. One nice thing about ret is that you can see how clear the pt's media is, it gives you an idea of how crisp a 20/20 (or worse) you can expect to get.

    An easy way to find docs to shadow is to go with your friends/family to their eye appointments. While you're there you can observe the office and the exam, and talk to the doc about your interest in optometry.

    I feel the same way. I started introducing myself with "Hi, I'm Jane Smith" when I first greet the patient. They know I'm a doctor, and because most of my patients are well-educated professionals I feel like it's a fair way to make the introduction. My dermatologist introduces herself that way...
