Practicing pathologists: How did you get your current or former job(s)?

Word of mouth. The pathologist in the group did a fellowship at my institution and contacted my fellowship director that they were hiring.

    Technical question for pathologists

Excluding plasma cells, T and B cells look identical by morphology. You need flow or ICH to tell them apart.

    Will virtopsy replace all autopsys?

I am at a Children's hospital, and I feel autopsies in this setting do still hold some value. It is not uncommon to find a congenital anomaly or malformation of significance at the time of autopsy that was not previously known, and this information can be very helpful to a family. We have...

Metastatic papillary thyroid carcinoma vs ectopic thyroid inclusion...

I had a recent thyroidectomy case for PTC and one of the lymph nodes had a very cytologically bland looking foci of thyroid tissue. The cytology looked much different from the primary tumor. Everything I read on the topic is that these are treated as mets despite the bland histology. Your...

what to study for pedi path boards

I found going through the old spp study sets quite helpful. I flipped through the diagnostic pediatric surgical pathology book to get an idea of topics that I needed to brush up on, and then used potter's or stocker and dehner to read more on the topic. You don't really need to spend much time...

    Pathology moonlighting

Yes, I've seen that summary before. Do keep in mind that only 19 people took the PISE that year, so it can be easy to skew the data.

    Pathology moonlighting

While the job market in pediatric pathology is perhaps stronger than many other areas of pathology, it is not all rainbows and sunshine either. Having recently interviewed a year ago (and found a job), 200K is definitely an overestimate. More realistic numbers would be 130-150 or lower if it...

Any idea if they are grading the 50 question primary AP/CP separate from the 150 question subspecialty component?

    Pathology elective rotation

If you will be doing surgical pathology, The Practice of Surgical Pathology by Molavi is good introduction. It is a fairly quick read. It is often suggested for first year residents prior to their first surg path rotation. Ask the residents at your program, someone probably has a copy you can...

    Fetal weights/measurements

I use the measurements and weights from this article: Archie J et al. Am J Clin Pathol 2006; 126:256-265 They have a website that you can plug in your numbers that uses the values from the paper: http://autopsy.jarchie.com/ I have found it helpful.

pathology boards and washington manual for pathology

I flipped through it about year before I took the boards. It's a quick read. However, it really is not detailed enough for board study. I did think it was helpful in identifying areas I was weaker in so that I could do more focused review from other sources.
