    2018-2019 University of Connecticut

As a first year, you'll have 2-6 hours of mandatory class/lab/clinical every day. There is a very small chance that you'll have Thursday off, but most people do not. I live about 20 minutes away (if there's no traffic in Hartford. Ha!), and so do a few of my classmates, but I haven't heard of...

    2018-2019 University of Connecticut

The silence is pretty typical. It’s a small office, and the staff has non-admissions duties as well. Last cycle, I was complete mid-August and didn’t hear anything at all until this week last year (II on Monday for an interview on Friday). The committee took a break for the holiday and just...

Which schools require pre-reqs within 5 years

UConn has no expiration. UMass is 6 years, last I checked. BU is 10 years. MSAR has a field for this info (though not all schools fill it in), some additional schools list it on their websites, the rest you have to call or email individually.

More difficult to learn when older?

Both of these are definitely true of me. I never learned how to study as a young student (because I was one of those annoying people who never needed to study). I got through paramedic school without ever even opening the textbook: just went to class, payed moderate attention, applied stuff in...

    2018-2019 University of Connecticut

Dr. Regan (the dean of admissions) sits down with each group together and asks some easy, get-to-know-you questions. There’s also a brief mock TBL session exercise. Maybe that’s what they meant? Hi all! Congrats to everyone with IIs! I’m a current first-year; I can answer questions about the...

is it considered old to graduate at 31 as a doctor??

I'm 40, and I started medical school this week!

Did you move for med school or residency? Is it uncommon to stay in-state?

I tried to apply near where I had at least some family/friends, but I wasn't really in a position to be choosy (low GPA, low MCAT the first cycle). I live in central CT and drove 3 hours to ME (twice), 10 hours to PA (wish I'd flown!), and 2 hours to NY to interview, plus flew to FL and applied...

First day DO shadowing, what should I bring/know?

All the advice here is good, but something I didn’t see mentioned is: NO CELL PHONE! Turn it off, put it away, leave it in the car or at home, whatever you need to do. I was doing 8+ hour shifts when I shadowed, so I had emergency stuff in a small purse (pads/tampons, Tylenol, chapstick, small...

Non-trad between M1 and M2. Ask me anything!

Sorry if I’m barging in, but I did encounter a few (ex: BU wants EVERY prereq—not just sciences—within the last 10 years). MSAR has this info for some schools, but some don’t supply it and you have to check their websites and/or contact the admissions offices individually. I was never...

    Amcas college entry

OK, I looked at my old application. You have to choose what kind of program you attended in the college section, and I chose undergrad for the CC where I started my degree and then returned after I got my BA (and postbacc for the different CC I got my paramedic license from). When you enter...

    Amcas college entry

Hmm. I think you mark that by semester too. Let me check my old app and see what I did.

    Amcas college entry

I was in the same situation with my CC. You only enter each college once, with dates from the first semester you were enrolled there until the most recent. When you enter courses, you will have to select each semester individually. You just don’t enter anything for the semesters you weren’t...

    +And Lab....

Me too. Every class that didn't have lab had a mandatory "fourth hour" meeting for discussion/questions/tutoring.

EMS jobs & training in Work/Activities

Hi! I’m a 13-year medic starting med school this August. I think I used one for my primary EMS job (18 years at the same company, including leadership and teaching), one for my initial volunteer EMT gig, one for my critical care certification course (because it involved hospital time, physician...
