Applicant Shaming by admissions office staff

This isn't about the fact that the message was just upsetting. It's about a greater trend which raises concerns about this school altogether. For those of us who are involved in teaching medical students, we place a great deal of value on that important responsibility. My department chair...

Child fellowship UW, seattle vs WU, St louis

They're both great programs. I'm obviously biased in favor of WashU (St. Louis), but everybody here is very happy with their decision to come. I love St. Louis - it's a relaxed environment and everything is cheap/close, so it's actually practical to do stuff.

Advice for new PGY-1 Psychiatry Resident

Work hard, ask lots of questions, and never cut corners on patient care. If you do that, the learning will come... assuming that your program provides appropriate mentorship and didactics.

    list of upcoming conferences

Haha sorry, the point of the joke was that the response was about as detailed as the question. There are hundreds of conferences, and it would be impractical for us to list all of them here, especially when you could get the same information by just googling the topic. That's probably the reason...

    Difficult neuropsychiatry case

Agree completely with Fonzie's comments. Antipsychotics for delirium should generally be short-term. Even if you're not sure about potential disinhibition secondary to TBI, you still need to discontinue the drug because it was started for delirium, and the patient isn't delirious anymore. You...

    A unique situation... opinions appreciated

Agree with the above. Before you can be a psychiatrist, you have to become a doctor. If you're not interested in the rest of medicine, you won't be a good psychiatrist... the interplay is critical. As for getting into med school... that's a reasonable concern. The answer to that question really...

Mentioning my Anxiety Disorder in my Psychiaty PS?

I think it's more likely to hurt than to help. GAD is an extremely common diagnosis and most psychiatrists (i.e. most PDs) already know that it's particularly prevalent among med students... and psychiatry tends to attract a lot of people with personal/family histories of mental illness in...

    Clean Shaven for ERAS photo?

When I was on neuro, one of the nurses once correctly identified me and another guy as the rotating psych interns because of our beards. If I'm a program director someday, a rating of beard quality will make up 20% of each male applicant's overall score when we're ranking them. If the applicant...

    off-service rotations

This is what I was gonna say. Learn to be a good general doctor and it'll pay off.

Mental health writing pet peeve -- what's wrong with "I"?

This writer loves this thread. Yes, this is also a huge pet peeve of this writer. This writer has even noticed some of his colleagues (i.e. other residents) doing the same thing, even though they were never trained to do that - this writer thinks that they're just adopting what they see some of...

    Specialization in Autism Spectrum Disorders?

There are a few autism specialists here at WashU, and they get referrals from all over the place. You don't have to do a fellowship (beyond the child fellowship) - if you start out at an academic center and let everybody know that you have an interest in autism, you'll get a slurry of referrals...

Official 2016 Rank Order List & "Help Me Rank" Thread

I'm a bit late here, but if you thought the residents at WashU were intense, you probably spent too much time talking to me (which isn't a surprise because I talk a lot). Also, since you mentioned underserved focus - we see primarily (almost exclusively) underserved patients too. We don't go...

    ranking Midwest programs

Strangely, the above post comes off a bit antagonistic, but most of your points agree with most of what I was saying. We all know that the answer to that question is more complex than what I can easily write in a little post here. Yeah, I'd love to find a cure for ASPD. I'd also love to find a...

    ranking Midwest programs

Sorry, I wrote that wrong - I meant more lectures, not more training. I don't know about the other parts of their training.
