Wish someone whould have told me.

I talked to someone who has passed the QE and failed the CE recently about this and this is our working theory on the differing %s. Don't make too many judgement calls on programs, would recommend looking in the last column for 1st time pass rates for both if you're stratifying based on this...

    pediatrics in gen surg training

Yes there is, a survey review of the 2003 match demographics is published. Since you put a little effort forward looking it up on NMRP first, here are a few hints: 1) Try PubMed 2) TITLE:Cost considerations and applicant characteristics for the Pediatric Surgery Match. 3) AUTHOR: Little DC...

Can I ask for suture practice supplies?

If you're a premed focus on the MCAT and gettting into medical school. Not on throwing knots and suturing. There is a long way to go between undergrad and intern year. Also, playing MacGuyver with a needle and a banana are going to get you placed on someone's "they're a bit strange" list.

Realistically, can IMG match into PGY-1 Categorical GSurg?

If you are interested in surgery then do surgery. Fight to win, hedging is for radiology and lawyers. Go all in for surgery. As long as your visa is appropriate. Because even if you match for a categorical spot and have the wrong visa, they will pull your spot. Agree with other post, some...

Tulane university General Surgery residency program.

Apologies in advance but this is probably going to add a bit of gasoline to your already neurotic tendency about the Big Easy. Two rumors around the campfire. 1. Being fired in your R4 year. 2. The URBAN MYTH that a surgery resident killed themselves by clamping both their carotid arteries after...

    How to get published?

Case reports, case series, and retrospective reviews are great for medical students in order to check the “research” box off on your application. Sharing some advice from one of my mentors to pad your CV. Submit abstracts to national meetings in the area you are interested in to get more...

Wish someone whould have told me.

Thank you. I just focused on the % in the last column, because it represented the 1st time written (QE) and 1st time oral (CE) pass rate. I would guess most of us would prefer to only go through this gauntlet once.

Wish someone whould have told me.

Just discovered this website recently and wished someone would have pointed it out to me. This is biased by my interview experience, but it seemed that ALL the programs I interviewed with said ALL their residents passed the boards. Most programs would mention something on the order of "only 1...

    Surgery Interview Expenses...Are they tax-deductable???

Tax-credits I found helpful when filing my intern year. ($$$ - $) 1. Moving to another state for your job. Distance credit is based on previous zip code and current zip code. ($$$) 2. Rent a 2BR apt and use the second BR as a home office. Credit is based on house/apt sq ft and bedroom sq...

    Tips on makeing an incision

One of our surg onc attendings only uses a scalpel for mastectomies. I don't think he lets the scrub RN put the Bovie on the field. Another attending used to use the Tumescent solution, but she had some complications (flap necrosis/infection) so she stopped. Have you heard of this being...

Difference between MS4 GS and MS3 GS?

Regarding vague abdominal pain work-ups...lazy people aren't going to go away. Even if all the "IM/ER-bound" MS4's spent their entire 4th year following you around to do consults...you will continue to get these consults. Then to the second part of you statement, do you really think a MS4 is...

    Y!IFMBA - Surgery Style

    1. Netflix-online is great for slow inhouse trauma call. 2. "Warm Autopsies" (coined from a trauma attending) are truly depressing. 3. Gray's Anatomy...like a traffic accident the other night I couldn't turn away...just how bad is it going to get. WTF!!! an intern doing a heterotopic heart...

Difference between MS4 GS and MS3 GS?

If you're intersted in EM and IM...Why do a GS rotation? What are your goals (What do you want out of it?) as an MS4 rotating on Surgery? MS3 vs MS4 differences vary greatly depending on school (how it is structured), hospital (VA, community, Academic), Surgical Service (what you are...

    Research and the CV

There are other benefits for medical students looking into surgical residency besides the extra line on the CV...Lettters of Rec. As a medical student you can ask your attendings for any case report/case series they may have that you would be willing to write up. Though currently it is too late...
