    Medical school with kids

I went to Ross as a single mom. My older children contributed immensely and I am very grateful for that. Ross’ on campus daycare and day school were both excellent. They also provided basic medical care for my children. I am in an IM residency currently. It’s been a rough journey, but that’s...

Antipsychotics, weight gain, and medication adherence

No, I did not say that I was putting patients on Zyprexa. I have never even put a patient on Zyprexa or anything else. As I said in my post, I am an m4 trying to match into psychiatry. I am just trying to understand and learn from the cases I am exposed to for future reference. In my limited...

    Psychiatry psychologist relations

I never said it was long. It was organized well and was quite helpful. The patient is extremely aggressive. So the few extra bits of information were helpful in knowing how to set him off less.

Antipsychotics, weight gain, and medication adherence

Ironically, one of these patients requested injectables. Could not get the coverage. Yes, a different can of worms I know. So, even if the patient is severly underweight, it may be better to start with something other than olanzapine as opposed to start olanzapine then switch when the patient...

m3 told to get coffee by attending

The OP (a student) asked "what would you do?" The question was not "would you, a superior, ask a student for a favor?" I understood the question as being from one female student to other female students. (Though for coffee, I think gender is irrelevant.) I would do the favor. In spite of...

    It seems relevant.

m3 told to get coffee by attending

Not sure what you're looking for here. I apologized for my blatant stupidity. I do see how they are different. I never said they were the same. I only pointed out that we ask attendings for favors, too.

m3 told to get coffee by attending

I'm sorry. I actually did not realize just how stupid it was. I guess it's only blatant to others.

Blatantly stupid? Nice. It wasn't a comparison. Sometimes we ask for favors. Sometimes people ask us for favors.

Antipsychotics, weight gain, and medication adherence

I should clarify, we are talking adherence lasting several months, up to just over a year, at a time. Thanks for the feedback!

Does anyone have children while in med school?

Seriously, it's not that bad. Yes, it's difficult but it's certainly easier than taking prerequisites and having multiple part-time minimum wage jobs without guaranteed or set hours. Student loans are enough to live decently on. Sure, you study every waking moment, but that's better than working...

Antipsychotics, weight gain, and medication adherence

I have met two different patients with this pattern: quit taking antipsychotics because of the weight gain. They lose weight, go back inpatient, we put them back on olanzapine because they are so skinny. Looking through the charts, the pattern repeats itself. I'm an m4 trying to match into...

Not following your logic here. So I can ask my attending for a favor that may take hours, but she can't ask me for a favor that will take ten minutes?

    Psychiatry psychologist relations

Yesterday I was looking thru a pt's EHR and checked out his notes from psychology. Um, yeah. Our psychiatry notes don't look like that. Those notes were impressive:=|:-):!

Psych in 2018 and Step 1

You may be able to count on score to get you interviews in psychiatry, but it actually does not have a lot to do with your rank order (according to the program director survey)
