How many years after graduation to own a private practice

For an existing practice that is cashflowing? I imagine you'll be able to secure funding relatively easily.

Your kids' optometrist recommended it. You claim this optometrist is a friend but you doubt their judgement and instead defer to generalists? You see the problem there? I shared links to some of the primary research above. If you prefer some articles from your MD colleagues. I haven't...

I'm not making any recommendations here one way or another. All we know is your kid is already 12 and under -2.00. That's actually a pretty good starting point. If that were my kid I'd probably lean towards doing it depending on progression so far, parents refractive error, kid's preference. If...

I'm an optometrist. I don't sell any product. I recommend it for the right patients. Are you surprised a pediatrician doesn't know something about the eyes? When is the last time you asked your family med doctor about ocular hypertension?

How many patients a day do you as an optometrist? Do you feel you have enough time with each one or do you feel rushed?

About 18/day. It's manageable but also really easy to fall behind. I give most patients all the time they want/need/deserve, but it's also why I un-apolgetically fall behind. I always take my full lunch. I'll stay a bit late some days for charting or calling patients back, but getting the full...

DO NOT BECOME AN OPTOMETRIST!! Believe me, I wanted to be one too!

Thanks for the reply, Cesar. You've obviously done your homework. Your tone has changed on the most recent post, so I'll talk more about that specifically. Everything you said has some truth to it. However, this is a much more than the black and white picture you're trying to portray. On the...

DO NOT BECOME AN OPTOMETRIST!! Believe me, I wanted to be one too!

I haven't been on SDN for a while, but was told about the post and wanted to address some of the things I see here. I am a new OD. I graduated in 2013. I finished school with nearly 200K debt from undergrad and grad. I practice in California, arguably one of the highest cost of living and...

    Ortho K

People wearing soft CL or RGPs have the option of wearing glasses if they don't want to wear their CLs (due to seasonal allergies, infection, etc). Ortho-K patients, say you had allergies and the lenses are just really scratch/uncomfortable. What are your options?

Navigating the Optometry path with family in tow

I think schools allow you to to defer acceptance for the following year, but check on the schools you're interested in. Also, consider the monetary aspects of waiting a few years. That's a few years of salary you're losing as well as a few years of increased tuition.

    HPSP information

I BRIEFLY looked in to it. One of the reasons why it wasn't very attractive to me was the fact that you are committing to it for the next 8 years of your life.

How many of your parents actually come to interviews?

Although I kind of agree with most of the other points, I do not believe bringing someone along on the interview makes you look dependent. I really don't think adcom would care, especially if they specifically ask you if you'd like to bring along a guest. The purpose of an interview is for...
