Looking at joining reserves or NG. I’ve seen varying answers elsewhere so I am a little confused. My recruiter told me that the contract is 6 years active reserves and 2 IRR for the total 8 year commitment. Is it possible to break it up differently? 4 and 4 would be ideal initial obligation, but I could see myself doing it even longer but right now just trying to account for possible life changes in the next 6 years.

I have heard it is associated with the incentives. If I take less incentives can I change the years? Just trying to get some more information prior to discussing it with recruiter. Thanks

The initial contract is 6 years regular reserves and 2 years IRR (inactive reserves, but in time emergency can still be called into service). This would be regardless of incentives.

Plan for more than 1 weekend a month 2 weeks a year. Especially as an officer and especially if you go guard because there will be state missions/emergencies on top of the national stuff.
