Since it's a lot harder to get PGY2 post-residency or a PGY1 after working a year out of school, what are some things you look for in applicants that make them stand out? What makes you turn away an application versus keep considering it? What can we do to ensure interviews or even positions?

The drive to still learn? I think that is a big factor with candidates who are already a year or two out working and then consider going back to residency. As long as you can reflect in a good way that residency is what you want and you are technically taking a "demotion" to pursue this training you should be just fine.
