I just read that last year, the UPMC Vision Institute (University of Pittsburgh) opened near UPMC Mercy. What's the story?
Just speculation, but how about this scenario? ENT and Ophthalmology wanted to split so Ophthalmology formed UPMC Vision Institute. The Ear and Eye Institute remains for research but no longer patient care. Ophthalmology needed space, so they built facilities by UPMC Mercy. (I do know that Mercy Hospital had a bunch of residency programs, but not ophthalmology, and they were acquired by UPMC in 2008. St. Francis had an ophthalmology residency that closed around 2000 and the hospital was acquired in 2002 and subsequently closed). UPMC VIsion Institute is located about a mile from the old Eye and Ear Institute Building and closer to downtown. (end of speculation paragraph)
