My Interview on Osmosis.org: Leaders in Medical Education: Dr. Andrew Doan

Here's a recent interview where I talk about medical education, technology, and behavioral addictions related to technology (i.e. video games). http://blog.osmosis.org/2015/04/leaders-medical-education-dr-andrew-doan-head-department-mental-health-addictions-resilience-research-us-navy/

    Thoughts on Ophtho future outlook?

Still hard to predict, but there will always be a need for ophthalmologists. It's whether we work for ourselves in private practice vs being employed by "someone else". I chose to be employed by the US Navy and moonlight in a private practice in Temecula (a practice I built with a few others...

New Direction for the Ophtho forum if interested?

Great idea!!! I am no longer the moderator as I don't have time. Perhaps it's time for a new moderator? I will contribute content, but I cannot moderate this forum. It's amazing to see how this forum has grown from a handful of people to now a thriving online community!

Military Ophthalmology - FAP Program During Residency

If you're looking for a rewarding career with good pay and benefits, consider the FAP Program. In addition to your resident salary, you will get $1907 monthly and an annual grant of $45,000. You can make nearly six figures during residency. Military Service Payback is years supported during...

    FAP: Read before signing HPSP

I did the FAP and received the post 9/11 GI Bill benefits. I am still active duty in the Navy. If you are already a practicing physician after residency, why do you need to go back to college?

Do the Clinical and Surgical Brilliance of the Attendings Improve Residency Education?

I agree with you too. Some sports coaches are wildly overrated (and overpaid)! Have you seen this movie, and do you know about De La Salle High School Football Program? De La Salle clearly illustrates the importance of coaches, leaders, and mentors. While the smartest students need good...

Do the Clinical and Surgical Brilliance of the Attendings Improve Residency Education?

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2352144/#!po=11.0687 The above meta-analysis shows that work place and academic mentors do matter. The vision of leaders and mentors impacts others. Dr. Oetting, for instance, tailors the cataract surgery for residents, developed the "baby steps...

    Help with Ophthalmology Associate position

What is his volune? His volume may be suffering so he may fill up his schedule more. Every dollar you collect, he makes 70 cents. So if his schedule is maxed out, he has incentive to see you more productive.

    learning cataract surgery

Virtual simulators and eye bank eyes can be helpful to practice with. There are cataract courses at the major annual meetings too.

Do the Clinical and Surgical Brilliance of the Attendings Improve Residency Education?

Yes!!! Working with Tom Oetting, MD at U of Iowa, as well as mentors like Tim Johnson, MD, definitely helped in my surgical proficiency. If the coach didn't matter, then why do we pay so much for a great football coach at the college/professional level? Certainly the coach matters and so do...

Ophthalmologist employs CRNA - ophtho gets in major trouble when the gas goes wrong...

Lessons here are BECAREFUL and WISE! When I moonlight, I work out of an ASC that employs anesthesiologists. In the military, we work with CRNAs (which are fine for cataract & MAC cases in my opinion), but we have access to anesthesiologists when things can get bad.

    Fabulously wealthy ophthalmologists? What gives?

Thanks for these numbers! Keep in mind geographic location will affect your earning potential too.

glaucoma job market? why isn't it more competitive?

Post-operative care for glaucoma surgery is tedious and requires patience too.

Knowing someone at this institution? Really that helpful?

With most things in life... it's who you know... not what you know. ;)

Is an ophtho case report considered research?

Yes, but few journals publish case reports. Consider submitting to Journal of Academic Ophthalmology: http://digitalmagazinetechnology.com/a/?KEY=JAO-volume4-01#page=0
