Everbody always says Family Medicine is more interesting than it seems, How so?

The thread of the day has a last post from 2014? I'm confused :p

Questions about volunteering that may be considered rounding

I really doubt there are cookie cutter human beings. It's hard to not get jaded with academic medicine when old people on adcoms think like this of our future physicians.

    Inquarta Private Consulting

I generally found SDN helpful before med-school. I generally found talking to actual people more helpful during med-school. There shouldn't be need for private advising groups... but you do have to spend the time here reading!

Questions about volunteering that may be considered rounding

What you're doing is not rounding. However, it doesn't hurt to ask to participate or at least listen in on the actual rounds. You won't get actual cognitive/intellectual value out of it, but it's an experience.

**The Official Guide to Special Masters Programs**

4 years ago I was in a similar boat, the California boat. DrMidlife is giving out amazing tough-love advice... my heart really does go out to all the family-supporting Asian kids, though.

Why is IM getting more competitive?

I dual applied gas and EM as an IMG from SGU, with a healthy amount of IM backup. Certainly doable to get a good amount of interviews, but at places USMDs may not want to match to ;) ... it was also a huge headache setting up electives, getting LORs (and SLOEs). IM as a specialty is fine...

    Is a minor useless?

I hate that med school is also a numbers game, so that people who don't take tests well are disadvantaged when they pursue other excellent major/minor choices to broaden their experiences. That said, you also have to realize that you have to demonstrate adacemic excellence somehow... whether...

How much do presentations count for?

Undergrad presentations are a step below publishing in an undergrad jounal, which is lol to start off with. However, it is still an accomplishment and you should be proud of it. The way you discuss it and grow from it may be more important than the fact that you did it. Be sure to be able to...

    Non-clincal volunteer experience??

It counts because life is worth living to build your own experiences, not because it might make adcoms like you more... On a realistic note, it is good to demonstrate passion and continuity in whatever it is you do. Just have a good mixture of extracurriculars... and don't be well rounded just...

    3 Weeks

-I got a 250+ on it and still stressed the hell out and thought i would get below 200. Serial NBMEs is advisable here to gauge your ability and variance. -You seem to have a problem with testing, especially 7-hr long ones. You need to build stamina and optimism. -Since you stated that you felt...

    # of days in OR for LoR?

I feel like you should always have a 15 min chat outside of a patient care area before asking for an LOR...

    Thoughts on empathy

Ive witnessed that situation very often at my community teaching hospitals. I would rather that the student learn from it and strive to do better than leave medicine altogether. There are also specialties that dont deliver bad news and are very rewarding. Anesthesiology comes to mind...

What is up with all this hate?

Probably people dislike doing primary care in general (I am personally good at it, but I would be depressed if I had to do it for the rest of my life). Nobody I know dislikes the concept of primary care or denies a need for it. Everybody has good respect for FM, even in hospitals. Canadians I...
