    Heme/Onc Job Offer Discussion

there is no amount of money available to a hospital or to god and all his angels that would make me willing to be on call every week
  2. Q

The oncology institute of Hope and Innovation

Private equity involvement in health care is not legally punishable by the death penalty, which is perhaps one of the nicest things I can say about PE firms involving themselves in medicine

    ABIM recertification for specialists necessary?

Short of severe head injury, I can't see a reason for me to maintain 3 board certifications instead of 2. Dropping IM like a hot potato

Hematology boards: to take or not to take?

A good proportion of my practice is only boarded in Onc. They still see basic heme stuff, just no delicate coagulopathy or similarly complex things. It is doable to be onc-only boarded in general practice, though some places would probably prefer you be dual boarded. It isn't really feasible to...

Am I bound to this job legally?

If you were already legally bound they wouldn't have had to send you a contract

    Dramatically Elevated Folate Level

The people with significant folate deficiencies I diagnose will be pleasantly surprised to hear this. That aside, folate is reasonable to check in a patient with anemia (especially macrocytic), but if it is high just... stop checking it. My center stops counting after 14 ng/mL

    Can we finally ditch Coumadin?

I've made the shift because I no longer find them particularly Novel

Earning money and live in USA

They are tremendously competitive, neurosurgery more than cardiothoracic surgery, and US programs favor domestic applicants. It is technically doable but a foreign medical graduate has to punch far outside their weight class to make it more likely.

Med schools' responses to the recent delta variant COVID surge

Well in the pre-covid era, I attended most of my med school classes virtually, which is to say I watched recordings a couple hours later at 1.5x speed in my pajamas at home with a cat in my lap. It was a much better way to learn medicine than actually showing up in terms of both efficiency and...
  10. Q

So are all non surgical jobs just 24/7 epic write ups?

So first off, of course not, you aren't always typing. For example, you could dictate or use a scribe...

First week of heme onc fellowship, feeling overwhelmed

The beginning of my fellowship, I felt dumber than I did as a starting intern.
  12. Q

Why are you guys choosing third tier trash medical schools?

I didn't read this whole thing but have we been able to find out if attending the walmart heir's school gives you a complimentary membership in Sam's Club?
  13. Q

Are NYC residencies as horrific / malignant as people portray?

I have placed a foley once in my life, as an M3 in an OR to help out. I have never in my life drawn labs on any patient, and at this phase in my career that means I never will. I am very happy to have not applied to any NYC programs at any point in my training
  14. Q

    ITE Study Sheet

You should study/cram for tests to a degree proportional to the benefits of doing well on it and the consequences of doing poorly on it. The ITE has no benefits or consequences unless there is something unique to your program going on. Do with that what you will.

    Residency in undesirable location

Probably, but at the same time all I need to be reasonably content is a warm cave to play video games in and the occasional beer.
