    Older Medical Students

I'm starting school in three weeks (eek!) and I'm 33, married, with two kids. I'm going to a pretty "young" school, so we'll see how it goes. I think it will be fine, but I'm most worried about just finding time to spend with my family. I've already been invited to several social events -...

Questions about a book: Success Types for Medical Students

I haven't read the book, but I did meet Dr. Pelley and hear him present at the OldPreMeds conference last year. I'm not sure that concept mapping is for everyone. From his presentation, I got that it was best for sensory types. He did say that one of the secrets to doing well is to form...

Any news from Baylor - anyone?? anyone?!!?

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but IIRC from last year, everyone who interviewed got on the alternate list. Also, they wouldn't tell me where I was on the list. And, they didn't make calls until after May 15 - at least not that I heard of. Hang in there. EDIT - I just went back and...

    most bizarre interview moment?

Retracting my scathing comment - sorry, I'm sleep-deprived and crabby. It actually is a really funny story. :)

    What was your undergraduate major?

B.S. Aeronautical & Astronautical Engineering M.S. Aerospace Engineering (major - Orbital Mechanics) Can you guess I'm a non-trad? I had quite a few biology classes to take when I decided to switch to medicine.

Any news from Baylor - anyone?? anyone?!!?

I don't know if it helps, but I'll tell you what happened to me last year. I interviewed in late September, then didn't hear anything until March. In March, I got a letter saying I was on the waitlist (I believe everyone who interviews gets this letter if they weren't already accepted)...

anyone doing med school with a child?

Su4n2, I deferred this year so I could have a baby (I'm due in 3 weeks). So, when I start med school next year, I'll have a 10-month old and a 3-year-old. Luckily, for us, finances are not THAT big of a concern. School in TX is pretty cheap, and my husband has a job that pays well. We...

Anyone communte to school and if so how long?

I have a similar problem Agent. When I decided to go to med school, part of the deal was that I wouldn't make my family move. So, when I start next year, I'll have about an hour commute. I've already plotted out my bus route. I'll have a 15-minute drive to the Park & Ride, then take an...

Anyone have great MCATs and get rejected/barely accepted?

Or they went to a school or were in a major where it's very rare to have GPA > 3.5. Or they worked 30+ hours a week while taking a heavy courseload. Or, they had a couple of bad semesters due to family problems. Don't be so quick to assume people are lazy. Maybe you just don't know the...

Anyone have great MCATs and get rejected/barely accepted?

I got a 13,13,13Q and got into one school off the waitlist. I only applied to three schools though (two UT's and Baylor). I was repeatedly told that with my score, I would be a shoo-in. Not true. Don't count on it to pull you through if other parts of your app are weak. Of course, I'm...

    Medline Articles

Sometimes you can go directly to the journal website and find them, and sometimes the author's institution has them. However, I have usually been unable to get full articles.

What to do if your wife is not supportive?

Well, get used to this. You will have to justify your desires over and over in your application and interviews. It's even worse for non-trads.
