Why is the American MD so long?

I actually had a classmate in who decided to apply to medical school after doing 2 years of college (most schools will actually let you do this if you've completed all the prerequisites-- read their admission requirements closely). She ended up realizing sometime in 3rd year that she didn't...

How do I know which specialty I want to go into as an incoming MSI student?

I would say that for highly competitive fields, med students who have known what they wanted to do since the beginning of medical school and have been working toward that goal since the beginning of medical school usually do have an edge come application time. That said, many students are...

WUSM vs. University of Michigan vs. Baylor

As I mentioned, WashU's schedule ended up working well for me because I had the opportunity to spend 4 weeks as a 3rd year on service with the surgical subspecialty that I eventually decided to apply in. This allowed me to see several different aspects of the specialty, which turned out to have...

2013-2014 Washington University in St. Louis Application Thread

During my 1st year of medical school here, I was picking up my in-laws at the airport in my brand new car that I had gotten from my parents as a college graduation present. There was a tornado, and my car got totaled.

WUSM vs. University of Michigan vs. Baylor

4th year WashU student here. I also got into both Baylor and UMich when I applied, so I had a similar decision to make. I chose WashU for nebulous reasons at the time, but I'm glad that I did. I went into medical with no idea about what I wanted to do and eventually found my way to a competitive...

md or phD? yes? no? maybe? regardless, I WANT THE D!

But you're also delaying making an attending's income for 4-5 years. That's probably more than you'll save in tuition. If you're interested in research, but don't want to commit to a full PhD, many schools will allow you to do research for a year and get a Master's. These research years are...

What are the benefits of academic medicine?

In general, academic medicine is considered to be more lifestyle-friendly than private practice. This is because at large academic centers, you will have residents and fellows to take call for you, take care of your inpatient post-op patients, etc. Many academic docs also have protected academic...

Tricks to impress docs who want you to shadow ...

I was always told that when you don't know the answer to a question, you should try to start with what you do know and reason it out. That way, even if you get the answer wrong, you will have shown the attending what you DO know and that you're not just completely ignorant about the subject...

    Sex With Preceptor...

I'm not saying that this is what happened or even that the OP was unwilling. But you yourself said that she "likely thought by sleeping wih him shed get ahead." Wouldn't even just ALLOWING a subordinate to think that he/she could get ahead by sleeping with you be an unethical use/abuse of power?

Best order to do rotations in?

Medicine was one of the easier shelves for me. I think a big part of it was that I had it first and a lot of the material overlapped with Step 1 (which I studied a ton for, and which I scored very well on).

    Sex With Preceptor...

He may not have "forced" liquor down her throat or "forced" her to have sex with him, but it could be argued that he coerced her. The power relationship here is undeniably skewed, considering that he is her superior and will be responsible for evaluating her/writing a letter of recommendation...

3rd Year: Break rooms and Shower?

This is true at my school as well. There is a med student trauma pager that you can sign out (using your keys as collateral) when you're on call. Carrying it is optional, but it's great for knowing what's happening if a big trauma comes in.

Best order to do rotations in?

At my school, most people seem to like to do IM as early as possible. I ended up managing to get IM first and thought it worked out well to get a chance to do the whole generalized H&P first before learning to abbreviate/focus on certain parts in the other rotations (my school does not require a...
