Crnas won’t work 7-5 (4 days a week) for 350k all Fridays off 1099 8 weeks off

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
It’s opportunity cost. My kid has some end of the year event this weekend. So I can’t be out of town doing locums. I gave it to another doc to cover. So it’s 10-20k opportunity cost I’m missing out on locums just this weekend.

20k into 529 each year

Travel cost doubles with kids. 2 plane tickets equals 4 plane tickets. A $7000 vacation turns into $14000

So what I mean by people with no kids have different mentality than people with kids.

Kids cost time and money. Something adults with no kids really won’t understand.
It ain't the time and the money....

Rich people problems. Just like I listen to all the doctors complain about how much their architect is gonna cost as they gear up to build a 1Mil house. Or how expensive their vacations are getting.
Except here they aren’t complaining…yet.
I can’t imagine paying someone to clean that house nor the taxes on that house. One of our Doctor couples live in a 10k SF house with their five kids. They have a BasketBall court indoors though.
I have noticed that many doctors are out of touch. Always wonder if they have friends that are in the lower middle class.

You hear these surgeons in the physician dining room complaining about price of dozen of eggs that cost $4. Seriously!

6000 sqft home?

Do you have 6+ kids?
2 kids. That’s above average for Florida doctor homes. Most doctor homes are 4-6k sq feet.

I live in an expensive neighborhood (for Florida). Mostly self employed self made

Do you live in Palm Beach or Broward county? I ran away from south FL. That place is too expensive for me, but still have a couple of rental properties there though.

Is it you who was complaining about the price of airplane tickets? And you had to stay at a four or five star hotel and won’t compromise? Or was that someone else? I could be misremembering.

Out of touch eh? With your $400-$500 a night won’t compromise hotels eh??
Can't even find a $500 a night hotel that is a truly 4+ stars anymore for a family of 4. We usually stay in "small apartment" (600+ sqft with living room).

I must be an anesthesiologist schmuck with my 1000 sq foot apartment, my occasional travel splurges at the La Quinta Inn, and my wasteful stress free weekends off. I spent the weekend with my parents for Mother’s Day which basically cost me 50K (my usual 30K locums rate plus then 20K I lost in missed-out NFT trading time). I also only have 2 mil in assets, which pretty much makes me a poor person (5 mil is the cutoff for lower middle class these days). I didn’t get my mom a Birkin bag this year because, like a fool, I didn’t spend enough at Hermes to get invited to buy one (since I’m poor I can’t even afford the accent in Hermès in my daily parlance).

Also, I am really pissed off that my eggs are $6/dozen at the farmers market. That’s 50 cents an egg!!! Biden is really screwing me.

You can buy a used vintage Birkin at Saks Off Fifth online, for $20,000 :) go make your mom happy

This is super off topic but when Neiman Marcus filed for bankruptcy during COVID, Last Call NM had a beautiful red Birkin for $9,000. I low key regret not buying it because I could have sold it for double later.

How are these CRNAs getting the hospital to pay them per hour for 24 hours to sit at home? And you apparently??
They don't. Nobody gets paid a full hourly wage for sitting at home. They certainly aren't getting $51k/week. That's $18 million a year.

I'm still driving my old suv and living in my 1200 sq foot apartment with wife and 2 kids. I splurge every once in a while.. bought a new camera for $3k for my birthday.. but for the most part I like to save money. My wife loves to spend though...

U don’t know the game these days lol
The market is changing

I’ve had deep discussions with management at multiple hospitals. Hospital admin do not want to be the front leaders in pay. But I told them in 6 months being the front leaders means they are middle of the pack.

Comp is just going up and up in locums market

The only way to stop the bleeding is changing the w2 model of work. For docs. That’s min 18 weeks off up to 26 weeks off and doing real 1.0 fte work 40 hours a week. None of them 80 hour work week couple up and working like a 2.0 fte as a single employee.

Time and money

You shouldn't, they are nonsense. I'm full time locums with locums friends. No one is getting 50k a week. Some people cranking out call at a few sites are getting 30k a week. But even that is rare. 18-20k is more what people are getting.

Never say no one makes 50k a week. It’s just not me. It’s a few. Not a lot. Pick and choose ur hard weeks u want to work.

It depends how much post call u are willing to work. And the work load.

25k is reasonable. (Without weekends ) with one call
18-20k I can do any weekday I want with no calls.

It’s the calls that’s the money ball.

I'm on vacation this week, spending $62/night at an extended stay mo-hotel next to a freeway going through a Marine Corps base.

All I do in the room is sleep and clean my guns though. Occasionally pound on the wall so the hateful couple next door will tone down their screaming at each other.

I'm having a great time.

How do you have her convinced to live in such a small space? If must be a swanky high rise. And when you married her did you not know she loved to spend? Lots of people do. Especially women and some men married to doctors. 😂

Honestly, when doctors are looking for wives is there a checkbox that says “must love spending?” And then the complaining about it online or to your friends? Where are you finding these women??

Is this for military work or something? Or really just for fun? Because this sounds like a Tarantino movie with an explosion of some sort waiting to come ahead with the gun cleaning and all at the ready.
I mean I like to be economical but I trade cheap for safety and this **** sounds scary.

I'm shooting at a match this week. I used to be part of the Navy's rifle and pistol team. I still come back to the annual Atlantic fleet and all-Navy matches to shoot with friends, coach the newbies, and have a good time.

The hotel is actually fairly nice. It's cheap because it's not in Times Square or slopeside at Aspen. The neighbors actually were screaming at each other a couple nights ago, but I guess they didn't bring any guns, because it didn't get loud enough for the cops to come.

Is paying ~$900/night for a 5 stars too much? The room is 636 sqft. I think it's a reasonable price.

I vacationed in a very nice double-wide trailer at the lake last year. Aside from the ****ty water pressure, it was actual really fun, and cheaper than the larger houses we've rented there in the past.

If u need the space (4 people) it’s about right.

As kids get older (teens). You are stuck with 2 choices
1. Suites/larger rooms 600 sq-900 sq feet ($900)
2. 2 regular rooms ($450/night)

That’s why I drop 15k on a cruise to get a suite. 2 connecting rooms for one week is $7000 x 2 rooms.

You are correct. These teens cost money.

Now any hotel stay is at least $600/night even during "off season".

Also, from my limited experience, the difference between 3-star vs. 4+ stars hotel is night and day (service, cleanliness, valet parking, bar/restaurant etc...).

Have you ever been to puerto vallarta and if yes do you have recommendations

I have never heard of a Birkin bag until this thread. Out of curiosity I asked my wife what she thought of them. She said they were "expensive and ugly" which made me love her more.

Designer handbags are a waste even if a person wants it to signal status. You can fake these bags easily. I’d rather splurge on a nice car bc you can’t really fake that. A 911 can’t be faked.

“After weeks, and hundreds of anxious Control-Rs on the DHL tracking page, and a daily pondering about what my mother might say when she encountered my mug shot on the evening news, my Celine Triomphe finally materialized — anticlimactically, in a manner much like anything else I’d ever ordered online. The box was lightly battered from having traveled through Abu Dhabi and, funnily enough, a network of shipping hubs across France and Italy before it landed in my lap in New York. I ripped open the tissue paper to extract the Triomphe, that glorious vessel, my purse of Theseus. By sight, nothing was detectable. I faithfully counted the stitches, measured dimensions. Underneath my hand, the leather did feel a bit stiff, rather less plush than the version I’d fondled for an unnecessary amount of time at Celine’s Soho boutique beforehand. But this giveaway, this “tell,” would graze against my shoulder and no one else’s.

A strange, complicated cloud of emotions engulfed me wherever I carried the bag. I contacted more sellers and bought more replicas, hoping to shake it loose. I toted a (rather fetching) $100 Gucci 1955 Horsebit rep through a vacation across Europe; I’ve worn the Triomphe to celebrity-flooded parties in Manhattan, finding myself preening under the approving, welcome-into-our-fold smiles of wealthy strangers. There is a smug superiority that comes with luxury bags — that’s sort of the point — but to my surprise, I found that this was even more the case with superfakes. Paradoxically, while there’s nothing more quotidian than a fake bag that comes out of a makeshift factory of nameless laborers studying how to replicate someone else’s idea, in another sense, there’s nothing more original.”

Buying fake luxury goods, even if they look convincing, just make you a try-hard. It’s the difference between signaling your taste and status, vs begging to be accepted.

I cringe if I have to spend more than 150 a night for hotel. I've done a few at 300-400 but those were really special occasions.
Sounds like you need to pinch all your Pennies so that your wife can spend it all on frivolous ****.
It’s a win win for everyone. 😂😂

But many people buy luxury goods to try and signal status. It’s not a knock on them. Just how it is and how we evolved.

Yeah weird take. So buying a high quality duplicate is chasing status but paying 10x as much just because it’s “real” isn’t? That can be played both ways.

So your wife carries a birkin bag and stays in 300$ hotel? Not a good match.

To carry an ultra luxury bag, you need the right clothing, jewelry, shoes, cars, and residence to look right. This will be very expensive.

But a Porsche is like a boat or a horse on a lesser scale. You pay forever. A purse is more of a pay once and done.

I view it the exact opposite. I see someone spending 5-6 figures on a bag as the try-hard who has frivolous priorities, and the person getting the convincing replica as a genius for gaming the system and getting the best of both worlds.
