Welcome to the new age of dental medicine. BUSDM continues to study and envision the future of oral and craniofacial health and its impact on the practice of dentistry. As the dental and medical professions become increasingly more integrated, computer technology becomes more vital to patient care. As new high-resolution imaging systems are developed, the school faces major challenges in educating our students and caring for our patients given these new directions and impending and emerging trends. These certainties will necessitate that our curriculum undergo dramatic changes in the diagnostic, medical, behavioral, and restorative sciences. Some examples include the fact that saliva has become a major diagnostic examining medium, and may soon replace blood as a health monitoring fluid for the diagnosis of both oral and systemic diseases. And in the next decade with advances in genetic screening, genetically engineered tissues could replace all current restorative materials and systems. In addition, micropores are being developed to be inserted around the dentition to combat caries and periodontal disease.
Given the nature of both existing and emerging general practice dentistry, today`s graduates must possess scientific, technical, and intellectual knowledge and skill; a well-integrated working knowledge of biomedical, psychosocial, and dental sciences; evidence-based thinking that enables critical assessment and application of new approaches to patient care; and skills for accessing information in support of lifelong learning. The curriculum at Boston University School of Dental Medicine gives its graduate these skills.

Although we could tier rank, over the past 25 years we've found no compelling benefit for ranking schools. Students are most successful when they prioritize personal and academic fit over school rank.
