About the School

Baptist Health Sciences University College of Osteopathic Medicine (BUCOM) is a private, nonprofit medical school located in Memphis, Tennessee. Established in 2023, BUCOM is affiliated with Baptist Memorial Health Care, one of the largest healthcare networks in the Mid-South. The college received pre-accreditation status from the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation in April 2023, allowing it to begin accepting students for the fall 2024 semester. BUCOM's mission is to prepare physicians who integrate the art and science of healing with their faith, calling, and pursuit of excellence, focusing on serving diverse populations in urban, underserved, and rural areas.

Curriculum

BUCOM's curriculum is designed to educate and assess students in the seven osteopathic core competencies, emphasizing principles and practices of osteopathic medicine. The program includes evidence-based learning objectives that teach manual, cognitive, and non-cognitive skills necessary for developing physician competencies in Osteopathic Principles and Practice (OPP) and Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM). These principles, examination skills, and treatment techniques are taught longitudinally over the four-year program. Faculty employ a combination of adult learning methods, including team-based learning, problem-based learning, skills labs, standardized patient examinations, simulation experiences, and didactic instruction. During the third and fourth years, students work with DO preceptors across Baptist Memorial Health Care's comprehensive care system to demonstrate clinical application of OMM practices and other medical core competencies.

Facilities

BUCOM's campus underwent a $34 million renovation to create a state-of-the-art, 100,000-square-foot facility in Memphis. This modern learning environment is designed to support innovative medical education and hands-on clinical training. The facility includes advanced classrooms, simulation labs, and collaborative spaces to enhance the educational experience for students. Additionally, BUCOM benefits from its proximity to and collaboration with other professional training programs at Baptist Health Sciences University, providing inter-professional learning opportunities.

Why no Tier Rankings?

Although we could tier rank, over the past 25 years we've found no compelling benefit for ranking schools. Students are most successful when they prioritize personal and academic fit over school rank.
