Founded in 1851, Georgetown University School of Medicine is the oldest Catholic medical school in the United States and is located in Washington, D.C. It operates as part of the Georgetown University Medical Center and maintains a strong affiliation with MedStar Health, a regional healthcare network that includes MedStar Georgetown University Hospital and MedStar Washington Hospital Center. The school offers a four-year Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) program, along with several dual-degree options such as MD/PhD, MD/MBA, MD/MPH, and MD/MS. Guided by Jesuit values, particularly the principle of cura personalis or “care of the whole person,” the institution emphasizes ethical, compassionate, and community-focused medical education.
Georgetown’s medical curriculum is structured around three core domains: Knowledge, Skill, and Values & Attitudes. The preclinical phase spans approximately 15 months and is organized into organ system-based modules that integrate basic sciences with clinical relevance. Students are introduced to clinical and ambulatory care early in their education, with opportunities for electives and independent study. The curriculum also includes the “Service and Justice in Health Care” program, which fosters a commitment to serving vulnerable and underserved populations. Additionally, students can participate in Longitudinal Academic Tracks in areas such as Health Justice, Medical Education, and Bioethics, allowing for in-depth exploration of specific interests alongside the core curriculum.
The School of Medicine is housed in the Medical-Dental Building on Georgetown’s campus in Washington, D.C. Adjacent to the school is the MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, a 609-bed academic teaching hospital that recently expanded with the addition of the Verstandig Pavilion. This new facility encompasses approximately 477,000 square feet and includes 31 advanced operating rooms, 156 private patient rooms, a modern emergency department, and a rooftop helipad. The Georgetown University Medical Center also features the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, the only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center in the Washington metropolitan area, and the Dahlgren Memorial Library, which supports the medical school’s educational and research missions.
The School of Medicine has a total enrollment of approximately 796 students. The Class of 2025 is noted for being the most diverse in the school’s history, with just over one-third of the incoming students identifying as underrepresented in medicine (URiM). This milestone reflects Georgetown’s ongoing efforts to promote diversity and inclusion within its medical community. The school has also established the Racial Justice Committee for Change (RJCC) to address systemic issues and foster an inclusive learning environment.

Although we could tier rank, over the past 25 years we've found no compelling benefit for ranking schools. Students are most successful when they prioritize personal and academic fit over school rank.
