Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine (HMSOM), located in Nutley, New Jersey, was established in 2015 as the state's first private medical school in decades. Initially affiliated with Seton Hall University, HMSOM became independent in 2020. The school is part of the Hackensack Meridian Health network, which includes 18 hospitals and is the largest hospital network in New Jersey. HMSOM received full accreditation from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) in February 2023.
The curriculum at HMSOM is designed to be highly integrative, combining traditional medical education with a focus on the socio-economic factors that influence health outcomes. From the outset, students are exposed to clinical experiences, working closely with patients and healthcare professionals. This hands-on approach is complemented by a problem-based learning (PBL) model, which encourages students to work in teams to solve complex health problems. This model aims to foster a deep understanding of the biomedical sciences, along with the development of critical thinking and communication skills.
HMSOM is situated on the 20-acre Interprofessional Health Sciences (IHS) Campus, which occupies part of the former Hoffmann-La Roche headquarters in Nutley and Clifton, New Jersey. The campus features state-of-the-art classrooms, laboratories, and simulation centers designed to support the school's innovative curriculum. Additionally, the campus houses the Hackensack Meridian Health Research Institute, facilitating collaboration between students, faculty, and healthcare professionals on a variety of research projects.

Although we could tier rank, over the past 25 years we've found no compelling benefit for ranking schools. Students are most successful when they prioritize personal and academic fit over school rank.
